Jack Innanen walked into the spotlight with the kind of disappointment that sticks—especially when it comes with fans already writing your character into the story.
At the Tribeca Film Festival, while attending the Adults season two premiere, the 27-year-old Adults star was asked about Heated Rivalry’s upcoming second season and the role he was reportedly offered. When pressed about which part it was, Innanen only gave a tight answer: “I can’t [say].”
He said the deal didn’t come together the way he and viewers hoped. “I think it’s such an incredible show, and it didn’t work out,” he said. “But I love Jacob, I love everyone involved. I’m just, I’m excited to see what they do for the second season.”
Innanen had campaigned for a spot on the hit Crave series. and fans had plenty of reason to hope—he was repeatedly fan-cast for one of two roles in season two: Troy Barrett and Wyatt Hayes. This week. though. it was reported that he was offered a role but had to turn it down because of scheduling conflicts.
The way his comments land is familiar to anyone who’s watched a fan-favorite casting story unravel: admiration for the show, regret over timing, and an eagerness to see what happens next anyway.
Heated Rivalry season two is said to begin filming later this summer in Canadian cities Toronto and Montreal, and is rumored to go through December. The longer production time compared to season one has fans speculating season two could be filmed back-to-back with an unconfirmed third season.
Season two is also expected to largely focus on Rachel’s second book about Shane and Ilya, “The Long Game,” with elements from “Role Model,” which focuses on Troy Barrett and Harris Drover, added in.
For now, Innanen is out of the running—but his enthusiasm for the series remains clear, even if the role didn’t work out.
