Is the Packers refusing to name starting Week 1 O-line vs. Vikings ‘gamesmanship’?

With Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season officially set to kick off on Wednesday night, when the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks run back their Super Bowl showdown, there’s a bit of a mystery going on in Green Bay regarding who will start on the offensive line for the Packers in their early divisional showdown against the Minnesota Vikings.

On paper, it’s not hard to identify who should start for the Packers if everyone is at full strength, but interestingly enough, the team won’t say whether or not everyone is healthy enough to play, with the statuses of left guard Aaron Banks and right tackle Zach Bako-Bewele strangely unclear for Week 1, as explained by The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman.

“The Green Bay Packers don’t know who’s starting on their offensive line Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings, or at least they’re not revealing that information,” Schneidman wrote.

“The two most veteran starters on Green Bay’s offensive line are left guard Aaron Banks and right tackle Zach Bako-Bewele. … Both finished camp on the field, but coaches this week are making it sound like their statuses aren’t certain for the season opener. Maybe it’s just gamesmanship, but it’s fair to wonder whether those uncertainties are legitimate.”

Asked directly about his offensive line heading into Week 1, offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich kept things frustratingly close to the vest, noting that the trenches remain a “work in progress” heading into the regular season debut.

“Well, no, as far as like who’s gonna be starting and things like that,” Stenavich said via The Athletic. “It’s still a work in progress, unfortunately, with the injury situations to Banks and Zach. So yeah, we have plans for everything and we’re gonna make the best of it, whoever’s out there. We’re just gonna focus on our playstyle, doing a great job communicating and going and playing our brand of football.”

What is the benefit of the Vikings not knowing who will start on the Packers’ Week 1 offensive line? Do they think Brian Flores would install additional blitzes targeting left guard or right tackle that would be rendered moot if Banks and Bako-Bewele can play? Or is this simply an example of one team attempting to game a division rival, even if doing so with offensive linemen over, say, a quarterback or cornerback, could prove far less effective?
