Is Lions’ Jahmyr Gibbs contract extension coming after briefly joining practice in uniform?

The Detroit Lions have been without Jahmyr Gibbs during early practices as the running back seeks a new contract. He is staging a “hold-in”, reporting to the facility but not participating in practice. With Bijan Robinson and Jonathan Taylor signing new deals, a contract for Gibbs could be coming. He did briefly join practice on Thursday, which could point to a new deal, per reports.

“Jahmyr Gibbs in uniform, taking reps during the walk/through portion of Lions practice,” Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reported. In a seperate post, Birkett reported, “After walk-through and stretch, Gibbs went to a side field to work with a trainer. A week in, no practice yet, doubt he’ll do much else today.”

“As Lions break into their stretch lines, Dan Campbell walked with his arm around Gibbs and a couple other staffers stopped by to offer words,” Justin Rogers of the Detroit Football Network posted on social media.

ESPN’s Eric Woodyard reported, “I’m told that Jahmyr Gibbs won’t be doing any individual drills today.”

Gibbs has 1,233 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns in an epic 2025 season. He added 616 receiving yards and five touchdowns, making him one of the most dynamic running backs in the league. Now, he is set for a massive payday heading into his fourth season.

Robinson made a big splash early in the week, signing a three-year $75 million deal that is loaded with guarantees. Taylor followed up with a two-year deal that is worth up to $47 million. All three of those backs had incredible seasons last year, so a comparable deal for Gibbs should be coming.
