The driver lost control on a winding route in scenic Denbighshire, UK, and the vehicle rolled down a mountainside before bursting into flames moments after she was able to escape. When emergency services eventually arrived 20 minutes later, she credits the speed of that response to her iPhone.

Both emergency responders and a mountain rescue team, along with firefighters, had been alerted by her iPhone and its automatic Crash Detection feature. “I’m grateful to Apple for what the iPhone did,” the woman told the BBC. “I don’t think that I would have been able to get help that quickly.”

The call for help was only the beginning. Her recovery has been long and painful: she spent four months in the hospital and required multiple surgeries. She is now left with life-changing damage to her ankle and her spine.

Crash Detection is built into modern iPhones and Apple Watches. It was first introduced alongside the iPhone 14, Apple Watch Series 8, and Apple Watch Ultra. The feature uses sensors to detect severe car crashes, then sounds an alarm and displays an on-screen alert for 10 seconds. If that alert is not dismissed, Crash Detection automatically places a call to emergency services.

What makes it especially valuable. according to the way it’s designed to work. is how directly it can guide first responders. Crash Detection shares the device’s location and the device owner’s Medical ID if one has been set up. It has also proven particularly important in situations where a driver has been rendered unconscious. allowing emergency services to be summoned long before someone might otherwise call.

In her case, those seconds appear to have mattered. Her iPhone sent help to the crash site, and emergency teams reached her within 20 minutes — a timeline she says she could not have achieved on her own.
