iOS 27 set to debut Monday—stability, Siri overhaul

Monday is creeping closer, and this time the buzz isn’t just about flashy features. It’s about whether Apple will finally treat iPhone performance like the main event.

At WWDC 2026, Apple plans to announce iOS 27 on June 8 during the opening keynote at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET. After that reveal, the update will move into beta testing for developers. Then comes the public phase: an iOS 27 public beta is expected to be released in July. followed by a general release to the public in September.

The exact timing matters for more than excitement. The iOS update rhythm has been remarkably consistent over the last five years—iOS 26 on Monday. September 15. 2025; iOS 18 on Monday. September 16. 2024; iOS 17 on Monday. September 18. 2023; and iOS 16 on Monday. September 12. 2022. iOS 27 would slot into that same September window if plans hold.

But before anyone gets to new tools, there’s a tougher question iPhone owners are likely already asking: will their device still be supported?

iOS 27 compatibility

iOS 27 will reportedly drop support for iPhone models including iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11, and iPhone SE (2nd generation). For people who bought those phones with the expectation of a long software runway. it’s a reminder that the “upgrade path” doesn’t just run on new features—it also runs on hardware limits.

New features in iOS 27

The clearest signal in the current chatter is that Apple isn’t aiming only upward. Bloomberg reports Apple’s primary focus with iOS 27 will be “quality and underlying performance,” a quieter phrase that lands differently than the usual promise of new capabilities.

Mark Gurman has described Apple engineers “combing through Apple’s operating systems” to cut bloat. fix bugs. and “any opportunity to meaningfully boost performance and overall quality.” The logic. as described. is a step back after several years of major iOS changes—Apple Intelligence with iOS 18. and the Liquid Glass redesign with iOS 26—followed by groundwork for what’s next.

There’s also a practical hope baked into that plan: Apple wants the update to improve iPhone battery life for users.

Foldables and the next form factor

Another part of the pitch is what’s coming after today’s iPhones. One aspect of iOS 27 will be optimizing the software platform for Apple’s first foldable iPhone, set to launch in September 2026. That device is rumored to have an approximately 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch outer display.

Bloomberg says Apple will “prioritize software features tailored specifically to this new form factor.” The latest reports suggest Apple is planning new windowing features for the iPhone Fold. including a way to run two apps side-by-side—something currently not possible on an iPhone. Apple is also reportedly developing new iOS app layouts for its own apps to fit the larger inner display. with third-party developers able to adopt those layouts.

Apple Intelligence: search, Siri, and writing tools

If stability is the message, Apple Intelligence is the promise—only this time it seems less like an add-on and more like the backbone of the system.

Apple is continuing work on an AI-powered web search platform that could ship as part of iOS 27. The platform is being framed as a new approach designed to rival AI search features from companies like Perplexity.

Apple has also finalized its deal with Google to use Gemini models to power new Siri and Apple Intelligence features. A report from The Information suggests Apple is set to use Gemini models to power several iOS 27 features, including:

Siri’s ability to remember past conversations;
Proactive features that could suggest users leave home to avoid traffic ahead of an airport pickup listed on their Apple calendar.

There’s also talk of a standalone Siri chatbot app. Bloomberg reports iOS 27 will include a standalone Siri chatbot app similar in concept to apps like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. The app would let users communicate with Apple’s chatbot powered by a Gemini model from Google. with a grid of conversations. the ability to upload files and photos. auto-deleting chats. and more.

Then comes the Siri makeover people will notice instantly.

Apple has reportedly completely redesigned Siri as part of iOS 27. Instead of the current glowing interface around the edges of an iPhone’s screen. Bloomberg says Siri will live inside the Dynamic Island—an on-screen element introduced in 2022. When a user says “Siri” or holds down on the power button. the assistant opens in the Dynamic Island with a new animation that replaces the existing glowing interface. Bloomberg also reports this mode will have a dark-toned interface and is best suited for voice-based queries and search.

Apple is also reportedly preparing a separate “Search or Ask” interface. Users would swipe down from the top center of their iPhone’s screen to launch it, where iOS 27 would surface Siri Suggestions for frequently used apps, recent searches, notes, and more.

Writing tools are also set for an upgrade. Bloomberg reports iOS 27 will include a more powerful grammar checker similar to Grammarly. The system appears in a translucent menu that slides up from the bottom of the screen and displays original text alongside suggested revisions. Users would be able to accept individual suggestions, approve all changes, or ignore them altogether. There would also be controls to pause grammar checking and navigate between flagged sections of text.

Apple is also adding a “Write With Siri” toggle at the top of the keyboard, along with a “Help Me Write” button that “appears when users activate Siri while working in a text field.”

Shortcuts and custom wallpapers

iOS 27 is also expected to make shortcuts easier to create. The update would let users use natural language to create shortcuts simply by describing what they want them to do—rather than manually adding and removing actions.

On the personalization side, iOS 27 reportedly includes a new feature that lets people generate custom wallpapers using AI. The feature is expected to build on the existing Image Playground app and appear in the wallpaper picking interface.

Liquid Glass tweaks, camera controls, and photo edits

For Liquid Glass, Bloomberg reports there is no evidence iOS 27 will include major changes to the Liquid Glass interface. Mark Gurman says Apple started working on a Liquid Glass slider during the iOS 26 cycle but ran into engineering challenges. The slider would reportedly let users “finely control the level of the glass effect. ” though whether it lands in iOS 27 remains unclear.

Even without major changes, Apple is working on tweaks to “streamline” the interface. One specific plan: combining the search tab with the other tabs in apps such as Podcasts, TV, Music, Health, and News.

The camera app is expected to take another step too. After iOS 26 completely redesigned the camera app, iOS 27 plans to make the Camera app fully customizable. Users would be able to choose which features appear in the Camera app interface and where they are placed, using a new “Add Widgets” system.

Apple is also adding Visual Intelligence directly to the Camera app in iOS 27, with the feature able to recognize nutrition labels and contact information.

In the Photos app. Bloomberg reports three new photo editing features: “Extend. ” “Enhance. ” and “Reframe.” “Extend” would generate additional image content beyond the original frame. “Enhance” would automatically improve an image’s quality, lighting, colors, and more. “Reframe” would let users “shift perspective” for spatial photos.

The existing “Clean Up” feature is reportedly getting “significant improvements.” Apple is also testing natural language prompt-based editing of photos in iOS 27, though it’s possible it won’t debut as part of the initial update.

Wallet, Calendar, and the smaller interface shifts

Apple Wallet is set for two big additions. A new “Create a Pass” feature would let users convert physical passes to digital passes—for example, creating a digital version of a gym membership.

There’s also a feature designed for splitting bills at dinner. Bloomberg reports users would be able to take a picture of the receipt, assign different items to different people, and generate Apple Cash payment requests.

Calendar details are sparse, but Bloomberg reports Apple is working on a big overhaul for the Calendar app across its platforms. The software was originally planned to be introduced in 2026, but it was delayed and is now slated for the subsequent set of operating systems—iOS 27 and macOS 27.

A handful of other changes are also being floated. Notifications will now slide in from the left of the screen rather than from the top of the screen. The Weather app is adding a new “Conditions” panel on the main page for each city. including things like rain and wind. There’s a new animation for activating the on-screen keyboard. showing the keys sliding up from the bottom of the device’s interface.

Apple is also adding “redo and undo controls” when customizing your home screen. Safari will include a new start page with four tabs for switching between favorites, bookmarks, reading list, and browser history. Apple is redesigning the AirPods user interface in the Settings app. Bloomberg says iOS 27 might include support for third-party AirPlay alternatives such as Google Cast. with that feature potentially exclusive to the European Union. Finally, the Find My app is getting a subtle visual refresh, including new icons in the tab bar.

And then there are smaller itemized references from a leaked build. Macworld found references to a new pairing system for AirPods and “improved collections” inside the Photos app. There aren’t any further details about those two features, and it’s possible they’ve been scrapped altogether.

Where the story sits now

iOS 27 is arriving with a specific shape in the rumors: a blend of “quality and underlying performance” and a wave of Apple Intelligence upgrades—anchored by Siri’s redesign inside the Dynamic Island and a broader set of tools for search, writing, and interaction.

But for many people, Monday’s announcement won’t just answer “what’s new.” It will answer the harder question: whether this update delivers the day-to-day improvements users feel—especially on older iPhones now reportedly facing the end of support.

  1. So it’s coming Monday and then beta after? I always forget the dates and then my phone is like “update available” and I’m annoyed. If Siri gets better at least one thing can be fixed.

  2. Wait… iOS 27 is debuting Monday on June 8 but WWDC is like all week right? So does that mean my iPhone won’t get it until September 15 or whatever. Also I heard Siri overhaul means it’ll listen to you more which is kinda creepy.

  3. I don’t even care about Siri, I just want my battery to stop dropping like crazy. They say “quality and underlying performance” but Apple always says that and then somehow Wi-Fi gets worse. If the public beta is in July, does that mean iPhone 14 users will be stuck waiting longer again? My update rhythm is already chaotic, feels like they move it every year.
