Invincible’s Andrew Rannells still unsure about Season 4 recast

Andrew Rannells says he doesn’t know why he wasn’t asked back to voice William Clockwell in Invincible Season 4, pointing to “a little restructuring” and noting that several guest stars also didn’t return. The Season 5 future remains unclear, even as Aaron Pau

Invincible Season 4 brought back familiar faces for fans, but one returning absence has stuck in people’s minds: Andrew Rannells didn’t return to voice William Clockwell.

Rannells—known to viewers as Mark Grayson’s loyal best friend across Invincible’s first three seasons—was replaced for the fourth outing by comedian Brandon Scott Jones. When asked about the switch, Rannells didn’t have a clean explanation. “I’m not exactly sure why,” he said when he was quizzed on the recasting. He added, “I think there was maybe a little restructuring and they… I was a guest star. and there were a lot of guest stars that didn’t end up coming back for the fourth season. So I’m not exactly sure why, but I was happy to be a part of the first three.”.

That uncertainty lands in a wider pattern. Rannells isn’t the only guest voice to disappear in Season 4.

Heroes star Zachary Quinto was recast, with Ross Marquand stepping in as the voice of Robot. Hamilton star Jonathan Groff also didn’t return as Rick Sheridan; Luke Macfarlane instead took over the role. For viewers following cast changes episode by episode. it’s the kind of reshuffling that can feel small in the credits and bigger in the ear.

Invincible Season 5 is already confirmed, but it’s still unclear whether Rannells—or any of the other voice cast affected by those Season 4 changes—will come back. What is known is that Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul will be back, and there will be more “side quests” in the new season too.

Between Rannells’ “maybe a little restructuring” comment and the visible list of guest stars who didn’t return, one question keeps repeating for fans: was the change a one-off casting decision, or part of a broader shift in how roles were carried forward into Season 4—and beyond?

  1. I didn’t even notice until I read this lol. Kinda annoying though, because voice actors are the whole vibe. If Aaron Paul is back then why not him too??

  2. Maybe it’s because Rannells got busy like with Broadway or whatever? But the article says “restructuring” and I’m like… restructuring what, the plot? Also I swear Robot’s voice already sounded like that dude before.

  3. This is why I stopped watching when they start swapping people mid-season. Next thing you know Mark Grayson won’t even sound the same. Idk if it’s a cost thing or some behind the scenes drama, but “guest stars didn’t come back” sounds like they just didn’t pay enough. Prime always cutting corners.
