For a lot of Instagram users, the complaint is the same: they don’t want to “tune” anything. They want the app to understand what they actually watch.

Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s head, is pushing the platform in that direction. In a post. he showed new ways people might access a feature called “Your Algorithm. ” which lets users specify which topics they want to see more of and less of. The feature launched last year, and Instagram has been rolling it out into more parts of the app.

Mosseri’s pitch is simple: “We want to evolve Your Algorithm from a setting to something that feels central to your experience on Instagram.”

He also set expectations with a blunt note. “Some of this is testing now, some is coming soon, some might not work.”

The examples in the post point to a shift in how the customization prompt might appear. One idea is that pulling down in your Instagram feed would eventually bring up the Your Algorithm menu. Another suggests swiping up from a Reel could trigger a similar customization prompt.

There’s also a more direct approach shown in his examples: buttons beneath each Reel that indicate whether you want to see more Reels like it.

The reaction in the comments shows how personal this is for people. The most popular comments on Mosseri’s post all echo the same frustration, pushing for the algorithm to behave as a better reflection of real follow patterns—one user wrote: “WE JUST WANT OUR ALGORITHM TO SHOW THE PPL WE FOLLOW.”

At the center of all of this is the tension Instagram is trying to address: people want control. but they also want it to be effortless. If Your Algorithm becomes something you reach mid-scroll—rather than something you hunt for in settings—it could make topic preferences feel less like a chore and more like part of watching.

Where it lands isn’t guaranteed. Mosseri made clear that some of what’s being shown is only testing. some is on the way. and some might not work at all. But the direction is unmistakable: Instagram wants “Your Algorithm” to stop feeling hidden—and start feeling like it’s right there when users need it.
