A French journalist has been named the winner of the III International Journalism and Sustainable Tourism Prize “Ciudad de Jávea” after her investigation into the Mediterranean cruise industry impressed judges with its depth and insight. The award, organised by Casa Mediterráneo and Jávea Town Hall, recognises journalism that encourages discussion about the future of tourism and the challenges of balancing economic benefits with environmental responsibility. Cruise industry under the spotlight This year’s prize went to Elisa Perrigueur for her report Inside the Closed World of
Cruises, published in French newspaper Le Monde Diplomatique. The investigation takes readers behind the scenes of the cruise sector, examining how modern cruise ships operate and the impact they have on destinations across the Mediterranean. Rather than focusing solely on the holiday experience, the report explores the wider consequences of mass tourism for coastal communities, local infrastructure and the environment. Judges praised the piece for shedding light on issues that are becoming increasingly important as Mediterranean destinations continue to grapple with record visitor numbers. Sustainability
takes centre stage According to the jury, Perrigueur’s work stood out because it successfully combined environmental, social and economic perspectives. The report examines topics ranging from pollution and overcrowding to the dependence many coastal destinations have on tourism-generated income. Marina Alta journalist Marian Albalat received a special mention for a television report examining the importance of bees and their role in biodiversity.
