Hutson turnover fuels Canadiens OT loss in Game 3

Hutson turnover – A risky lateral pass from Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson led to the sequence that ended with a game-winning goal by Sebastian Aho. After an overtime Game 3 loss, Hutson said it “sucks” because it went in—and the defeat fell hardest on goalie Jakub Dobes, who

Lane Hutson can replay it in his head like a short film—how the puck left his stick, how it didn’t carry enough, and how quickly everything flipped.

In the neutral zone, Hutson tried a lateral pass toward Juraj Slafkovsky. It didn’t have enough on it. Ando Svechnikov stepped in. easily intercepted the pass. then drove the puck right to the net. splitting Hutson and defenseman Noah Dobson. From there. the play kept moving—Svechnikov retrieved the puck in the right corner. brought it back up into the circle. and passed across to Seth Jarvis.

Montreal had time to recover and defend, but the Canadiens were a step slow, chasing. Hutson skated toward Jarvis, but he couldn’t get there in time to stop Jarvis’s pass back to Svechnikov. Svechnikov put a wrist shot on net from above the right circle.

Sebastian Aho did enough to outmuscle Slafkovsky in front, and the puck went into the net off a body—an outcome that turned a turnover into a finishing touch. The goal became the game-winning tally.

“It sucks because it ended up going in,” Hutson said.

The person hurt most by that moment was goalie Jakub Dobes. Dobes made 36 saves and, in the eyes of Hutson, was Montreal’s best player—certainly its most important. But that shot from Svechnikov landed 12 seconds after Hutson’s turnover and 19 seconds after Hutson got the puck behind the net. and it didn’t look like Dobes could see it.

“He battles so hard,” Hutson said of Dobes. “Sucks that I just blew it for him, but it is what it is.”

Still, Hutson doesn’t have much time to sit with it. Montreal will get another shot to correct course in Game 4 here on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET, with broadcasts listed as CBC, TVAS, SN, TNT, truTV, and HBO MAX.

“We definitely have another level,” Hutson said.
