Hundreds of flights were canceled across the New York City area Tuesday morning as the region braces for rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms.
The Federal Aviation Administration issued ground stops at all three major airports, LaGuardia, John F. Kennedy International and Newark, shortly before 8 a.m.
By 10:30 a.m., the ground stops had been lifted, but JFK and Newark airports continued to see delays.
The FAA reported over 900 cancellations at the airports during the morning rush.
The following delays and cancellations were reported as of 10 a.m.
- LaGuardia: 110 delays and 339 cancellations
- JFK: 113 delays and 408 cancellations
- Newark: 130 delays and 169 cancellations
Air travel officials warn that conditions may change throughout the day as storms continue to develop.
As of 10:45 a.m., Newark Airport was continuing to see departure delays average up to 69 minutes, with inbound flights delayed at their origins an average of 78 minutes.
JFK was experiencing departure delays up to an average of 30 minutes and decreasing, according to the FAA.
On Monday, the FAA had issued ground stops at the airports due to staffing shortages at the New York-area air traffic control center. The stops temporarily prevented some flights from departing in an effort to reduce congestion in the air.
The travel disruptions come as a Flood Watch remains in effect for all five boroughs through Wednesday evening.
