Hull owner seeks play-off final cancellation over Southampton spying

Hull owner – Hull City owner Acun Ilicali says lawyers are examining whether the Championship play-off final can be cancelled following Southampton’s expulsion for spying, with a view to earning automatic Premier League promotion.
By 3.30pm at Wembley on Saturday. Hull City’s play-off final opponent could be Middlesbrough in full certainty—or it could be someone else entirely. In the hours leading up to the £200m showpiece. Hull owner Acun Ilicali has confirmed his club are looking at whether Southampton’s punishment can be overturned in a way that would send Hull straight into the Premier League.
The issue goes back to last week’s semi-final, when Southampton were expelled by an independent disciplinary commission on Tuesday. The decision followed the revelation that the Saints had sent a junior analyst intern to watch Boro’s training 48 hours before their meeting.
Southampton have admitted to having spied on their opponents, but they have appealed against the punishment imposed, leaving promotion hopes hanging in the balance for another year—unless the appeal changes the outcome quickly enough.
Ilicali said Hull’s lawyers are examining whether the final can be cancelled so Hull can be granted automatic promotion. “Under normal circumstances, two teams have reached the final and one has been disqualified,” he said, as per Asist Analiz. “Our lawyers’ opinion is that we should go directly to the Premier League, but they’re examining it right now. We can’t say anything definitive. It’s a bit of a messy situation.”.
The timing of the dispute is adding pressure of its own. Hull’s planning had been built around Tonda Eckert’s Southampton. with Ilicali describing how the final week suddenly shifted direction. “We had been preparing for Southampton for 10 days. All the planning, analysis, and work was focused on them. Now, with the days left until the final, the opponent has changed.”.
With Thursday listed as the “last serious training session,” Hull are set to switch to Middlesbrough with only one training session to do it. “We’ll prepare for the new opponent with one training session.”
Wednesday brings the wait for Southampton’s appeal to be heard, while the EFL is forced into contingency planning for Saturday. The schedule itself could move depending on whether Southampton’s reinstatement becomes possible.
Hull are currently set to kick off against Middlesbrough at 3.30pm—one hour earlier than the original plan. Middlesbrough have since been handed a place in the final, despite being beaten by Southampton on aggregate in the semi-finals.
If Southampton are reinstated, the final would kick off at the original time of 4.30pm.
For Southampton, the stakes are clear: being barred from Saturday would mean missing the richest prize in football. The club did beat Middlesbrough on aggregate in the semi-finals, but the disciplinary decision ended their route through the play-offs.
For Hull and their supporters, the frustration extends beyond the pitch. Daily Mail Sport reported that. with £250. 000-worth of bonuses for players who might have won promotion on the line. the squad could yet consider a class action suit to sue their club for loss of earnings. Fans are also demanding refunds to the Wembley showpiece after the clubs were both booted out of contention and handed a four-point deduction ahead of next season.
Whatever the court of appeal decides, the human impact will be felt quickest in the way teams prepare—one training session, one schedule change, and a final that could swing between opponents before the first whistle.

So like… they want the final canceled because the other team got caught spying? That sounds kinda backwards.
I don’t even understand the whole playoff rules but if Southampton got expelled then shouldn’t Hull just move up automatically? Sounds like someone’s trying to game the system.
This is messy for sure. Wait, the “intern” watched training 48 hours before? So we’re canceling a Wembley game over a junior analyst? I mean spying is spying but idk how that turns into Premier League promotion for Hull.
Championship final being messed with at the last second is crazy. I heard on TikTok it was more than just watching training like they hacked something?? but then again people say anything. Either way if Hull lawyers win then that’ll be wild because Middlesbrough might’ve prepped for nothing.
