Houston’s shutdown delivers Walker, Paredes home-run punch

HOUSTON — Christian Walker didn’t wait around. He opened the fourth inning with his 20th home run of the season, starting a streak of five consecutive 20-homer campaigns for the Houston slugger. Two innings later, Isaac Paredes added his 12th homer by taking the lead off the sixth.
The Astros didn’t stop there. Four pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout as Houston held Tampa Bay scoreless and won the matchup. Peter Lambert struck out six while allowing three hits and walking one over 5 2/3 innings. He was removed with a runner on second base. but Steven Okert inherited the moment and got pinch-hitter Ryan Vilade to fly out to end the threat.
Okert followed with a 1-2-3 seventh inning, and Bryan King handled the eighth after a leadoff single. In the ninth, Josh Hader overcame a leadoff walk and closed it out for his ninth save. Hader has allowed one run and two hits over 15 innings this season.
Mason Englert had the start for Tampa Bay, but he couldn’t keep Houston off the scoreboard. After allowing the two Astros runs on five hits with a career-high nine strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. he was recalled from Triple-A Durham before the game. Cam Booser and Craig Kimbrel then combined to hold the Astros scoreless for 2 1/3 innings.
The win came with a sting attached for the Rays, who have lost back-to-back games after winning nine straight.
ATLANTA — New York’s cushion came fast, then got shaky. Juan Soto’s two-run single in the second inning put the Mets ahead early, but they still had to survive a late push from Atlanta in a rain-delayed 10-9 win.
A.J. Ewing launched his fifth homer, and Francisco Lindor added a run-scoring single as New York plated four in the second to go up 5-3. Tyrone Taylor homered, and Bo Bichette drove in two with a bases-loaded double in the ninth. Bichette finished with three hits and three RBIs.
The Mets felt safe for a moment. They led 10-3 after their five-run ninth, but the night refused to end quietly. Huascar Brazobán gave up five runs in the bottom of the ninth, including Drake Baldwin’s grand slam. Closer Devin Williams surrendered another run before striking out Dominic Smith with runners on second and third for his 13th save.
New York had already been through a lot in the series before the finale, having lost 12 of 14 games, including the first two in this four-game set against the Braves. Nolan McLean regrouped after a rough start and finished with five hits and three runs (two earned) across six-plus innings.
WASHINGTON — In Pittsburgh’s win over Washington, Konnor Griffin didn’t just make plays with the bat. He also delivered standout defense in a game where he was “also spectacular in the field.” His tiebreaking two-run single in the eighth provided the lift. and Brandon Lowe followed with a three-run homer off Brad Lord (5-2) to extend the lead.
Griffin. 20 years old. arrived in April on a nine-year. $140 million contract and showed why the Pirates see him as part of their future. In the third. he made a diving stop on Curtis Mead’s grounder. but Mead beat the throw for an infield single. In the fourth. Griffin fought the sun on Keibert Ruiz’s popup to shallow left field and made a diving. backhanded grab. In the next inning. he made another backhanded. sliding catch in the outfield. only for James Wood to tag up and beat the throw home—resulting in a rare sacrifice fly to the shortstop.
CINCINNATI — Spencer Steer swung the momentum in Cincinnati with his 14th home run of the season. Nick Lodolo followed with six scoreless innings, and the Reds beat Baltimore to avoid the sweep and stop a six-game losing streak at home.
Kyle Bradish retired the first 12 Reds, but the script flipped when he walked Eugenio Suarez to start the fifth. Steer’s homer made it 2-0. Bradish (5-9) lasted 7 ⅔ innings, allowing three runs and five hits with five strikeouts.
A rookie moment came next: Sal Stewart, a rookie All-Star, doubled home Edwin Arroyo to knock Bradish out of the game. Stewart now has 61 RBI, tied for seventh in MLB, and the most by a rookie this season. He’s also tied for 10th in baseball with 21 doubles, the most by a rookie.
Lodolo’s 14-scoreless-innings streak ended in the sixth when Taylor Ward doubled and scored on a single by Coby Mayo with two outs. Brock Burke made his 44th appearance this season—tied for second most in baseball—when he relieved Lodolo and pitched a 1-2-3 seventh.
NEW YORK — Joe Ryan scattered three hits in seven scoreless innings, and Minnesota won a series at Yankee Stadium for the first time since 2014. The result pushed New York to its ninth loss in 10 games.
Ryan (6-5) walked one and tied his season high with nine strikeouts. The Twins had outscored the Yankees 17-5 in the final two games of the series after going 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position on Friday.
Byron Buxton left after re-aggravating a previous hip injury while he was caught stealing second in the first inning. Brooks Lee finished with three hits. including an RBI single in the fourth after a wild pitch by Ryan Weathers (3-7). Royce Lewis had a two-run single in the fifth off Paul Blackburn. and the Twins scored two unearned runs off Camilo Doval after an error by Volpe at shortstop.
Volpe’s mistake came when he misplayed a high chopper by Ryan Kreidler. The Yankees committed their 20th error in the last 15 games, and the Twins scored on a bases-loaded walk by Austin Martin and a sacrifice fly by Kody Clemens.
The numbers kept piling up for New York. The Yankees have allowed 29 unearned runs in their last 15 games.
CLEVELAND — Chicago needed to earn its split. Colson Montgomery hit a two-run homer, and Kyle Teel and Tristan Peters added solo shots as the White Sox beat Cleveland in a finale delayed by rain and unplayable conditions on the waterlogged outfield warning track.
Before the rescheduled start, the umpires met both managers in the outfield to inspect the track. The grounds crew then spent 30 minutes applying a quick-dry mixture and grooming the track before it was deemed safe.
Down 6-3, the Guardians tied it in the fifth on Arias’ 446-foot drive off Erick Fedde (4-6). The White Sox responded in the sixth by loading the bases with none out against Colin Holderman (4-2), then pushing across the go-ahead run on rookie Sam Antonacci’s fielder’s choice.
Cleveland threatened in the eighth, but Antonacci ran down Kahlil’s Watson’s deep drive. Sean Newcomb earned his third save.
Earlier, Gabriel Arias had belted a three-run homer, and rookie Chase DeLauter also connected. Cleveland won the first two games on walk-offs.
CHICAGO — The Cubs avoided another kind of disappointment—one inning later, they erased St. Louis’ chance at a sweep. Nico Hoerner drove in two runs, Pete Crow-Armstrong had two hits, and Chicago rallied for four runs in the sixth against sloppy St. Louis defense to win.
Alex Bregman doubled in a run, and pinch-hitter Pedro Ramirez added an RBI as the Cubs posted two unearned runs. Chicago won for the 10th time in their last 13 games.
St. Louis threatened early through Jordan Walker. He hit his 20th homer, a three-run shot in the sixth, then drove in a fourth run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth to raise his RBI total to 67. Rookie JJ Wetherholt and Alec Burleson each had two hits.
After Walker’s drive to deep left put St. Louis ahead 3-2, Chicago benefited from two Cardinals errors in the bottom of the sixth. Hoerner tied it 3-all with an RBI single off Matthew Liberatore (4-6). Michael Busch scored to make it 4-3 when third baseman José Fermin threw Dansby Swanson’s double-play grounder wide of second and into right field.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Salvador Perez drove in two runs, Luinder Avile worked five innings, and Kansas City snapped a four-game losing streak with a win over Philadelphia.
Avile (4-3) held Philadelphia to one run in five innings with four strikeouts and one walk. Alex Lange pitched the ninth for his eighth save.
Kansas City jumped early in the first when Lane Thomas knocked a two-out double to right-center and Michael Massey followed with an RBI single. Bryson Stott extended his on-base streak to 12 games with a triple in the fifth and scored on a sacrifice fly from Gabriel Rincones Jr.
Perez sealed the game with a two-run double in the eighth that scored Bobby Witt Jr. and Thomas.
ARLINGTON, Texas — Riley Greene carried Detroit with a homer, a triple, and four RBIs in a win over Texas. Greene sent a two-run home run to right field in the fourth and then hit a two-run triple high into the left-field corner during a four-run fifth inning.
Casey Mize (4-5) allowed two runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings as the Tigers won the series rubber game to finish a 5-1 road trip. Kenley Jansen pitched a perfect ninth for his 10th save in 14 chances.
SAN FRANCISCO — Colorado found its edge late, and it went a long way. Kyle Karros hit a three-run homer to left field in the eighth to take the lead in a victory over San Francisco.
The 471-foot shot off Dylan Smith’s fastball was Karros’ seventh home run of the season and the longest of his career. With Karros’ homer, the Rockies now have 122 runs in the eighth inning or later this season—the highest mark in the majors.
TJ Rumfield had three hits, including his 20th double of the season, and scored twice. He has 94 hits, the most by a Colorado rookie before the All-Star Break in franchise history. Hunter Goodman and Troy Johnston added an RBI apiece for Colorado. which won its ninth series of the season. surpassing its total from the entire 2025 season.
PHOENIX — Jake Bauers delivered for Milwaukee with a seventh-inning homer off Arizona All-Star Eduardo Rodríguez, and the Brewers beat the Diamondbacks 3-2.
Bauers hit his team-leading 16th homer to right to chase Rodríguez (7-3). Rodríguez. a left-hander. took a 1-0 lead into the seventh. but the blast came on his 100th and final pitch of the game after Andrew Vaughn led off with a single. Named to the All-Star Game for the first time in his 12-year career on Saturday. Rodríguez gave up six hits. walked none. and struck out three. His ERA rose slightly to 2.25.
Joey Ortiz’s single drove in a run later in the seventh against Kevin Ginkel to make it 3-1. Arizona got that run back in its half when Gabriel Moreno beat the relay on a bases-loaded force play.
Drew Rom (1-0), called up earlier Sunday to replace injured Brandon Woodruff, got one out in the sixth. Trevor Megill pitched the ninth for his 13th save.
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Miami didn’t let go of its lead late. Eury Pérez pitched seven perfect innings before being lifted by Miami manager Clayton McCullough, and the Marlins nearly squandered an eight-run advantage in a win over the Athletics.
Heriberto Hernández homered twice for the surprising Marlins (49-42), who have won nine of 12 overall after completing a three-game sweep. Leo Jiménez and All-Star shortstop Otto Lopez also went deep.
Lopez, who leads the majors with a .346 batting average, drove in three runs and scored twice. He and Hernández had back-to-back homers in the sixth, and each finished with three of Miami’s 16 hits.
Lopez has 39 multihit games, most before the All-Star break since Houston’s Jose Altuve had 40 in 2014. Pérez (5-6) struck out a season-high eight and retired all 21 batters he faced. It was the fourth time this year he didn’t walk anyone.
SEATTLE — Emerson Hancock and the Mariners bullpen shut down Toronto long enough to reach 24 scoreless innings, then Mitch Garver delivered a finishing touch with a two-run homer in a 4-0 win.
Hancock (6-4) gave up two hits and two walks while striking out five over seven innings. He followed Logan Gilbert on Saturday to become Seattle’s first starting pitcher with consecutive outings of seven shutout innings since Bryan Woo and Bryce Miller in 2024. Over the weekend, the Hancock and Gilbert duo combined for 14 1/3 innings, no runs, three hits, and 12 strikeouts.
Gabe Speier and Andrés Muñoz each threw an inning of relief for Seattle. Toronto was shut out in consecutive games for the first time this season and has now won just two of its last 10, dropping six games under .500.
LOS ANGELES — Manny Machado hit a three-run homer, and Jackson Merrill and Fernando Tatis Jr. added RBI singles as San Diego snapped its eight-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
JP Sears (2-1) pitched five scoreless innings of one-hit ball as the Padres ended their longest skid since 2013 and avoided a four-game sweep at the hands of the back-to-back World Series champions. San Diego’s win was its first since June 26. and it was the second victory in its last 13 games at Dodger Stadium.
Four-time MVP Shohei Ohtani had an RBI single on his 32nd birthday for the MLB-leading Dodgers, who lost for only the second time in nine games.
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Jarren Duran and Willson Contreras homered, and Boston’s five Boston pitchers combined to hold off the Angels in relief of injured starter Ranger Suarez in a 7-5 win.
The Red Sox completed a three-game sweep of Los Angeles with their eighth victory in 10 games. The Angels have lost six straight and 12 of 19 since June 14.
Suarez. named to the American League All-Star team Saturday. exited with two outs in the third because of left adductor tightness. an injury he sustained when he jumped for Jo Adell’s chopper over the mound. Greg Weissert (1-2), Tyron Guerrero, and Garrett Whitlock then combined for 4 1/3 hitless innings. Justin Slaten gave up a run in the eighth. and Aroldis Chapman allowed a solo homer to Zach Neto in the ninth before earning his 18th save.
