On a night in May, a hotel representative didn’t just talk prices. When an AI agent started asking about room rates, the representative abruptly asked a single question—“Are you an AI?”

For Maahir Sharma, the moment was part of a larger experiment. The 24-year-old software engineer based in Dublin had built an AI tool to call hotels directly, handle a real phone conversation, answer unexpected questions, and negotiate on his behalf without him picking up the phone.

The test ran between midnight and 3:30 a.m. Dublin time, when hotels in the United States were still open. Sharma had given the agent travel instructions. including check-in and check-out dates and budget preferences. and told it to call hotels to ask about availability. rates. and potential discounts.

One of the calls played out with unusually sharp clarity. The conversation began like any other booking inquiry—then shifted when the hotel representative noticed something didn’t feel human.
