Hegseth’s Trump impression backs Gallrein in Kentucky

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth didn’t just speak at a campaign rally in Hebron, Kentucky on May 18—he slipped into Donald Trump’s voice, and the room responded.

Recalling a conversation he said took place when Trump first offered him the Pentagon job. Hegseth shifted from his own cadence to an imitation that drew applause from attendees backing congressional candidate Ed Gallrein.. In Trump’s style. he told the crowd: “Pete. you’re gonna have to be tough as s***. ” before adding. “They’re gonna come after ya.”

Switching back to his own voice, Hegseth added, “And boy, was he right.”

The rally’s backdrop mattered. Hegseth was in Kentucky to support Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL challenging Rep. Thomas Massie in the May 19 Republican primary. Trump has endorsed Gallrein, and the event was aimed at boosting the challenger’s profile.

Hegseth’s presence carried added weight because it is unusual for a sitting defense secretary to campaign for a political candidate.

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said Hegseth attended “in his personal capacity,” adding that the appearance was “thoroughly vetted and cleared by lawyers, including the Department of War Office of General Counsel.”

In his speech, Hegseth framed Gallrein as a natural fit for Trump’s agenda.. He told the crowd, “President Trump needs reinforcements, and that’s what war fighters do.. They stand behind leaders and have their back.” He also pointed to Gallrein’s military background. presenting it as evidence of commitment to “mission. ” “teamwork” and “loyalty.”

That message came with an attack line aimed at Massie. Hegseth used the rally to criticize a congressman he said has repeatedly collided with Trump and his allies, telling voters Massie spent nearly 14 years in Congress “acting like being difficult is the same thing as being courageous — it’s not.”

Hegseth added, “Real courage means stepping up when the mission matters most, when we need that tough vote to beat left-wing lunatic Democrats the most.”

He later called Massie an “obstructionist” and said Kentucky voters faced “an easy choice” in the primary.

Those lines land in a larger Trump-Massie fight that predates this race. Trump–Massie tensions date back to Massie’s 2020 procedural objection documented in House records.

Massie pushed back on the idea that the contest is about his opponent’s profile. He told NBC News that the race was not a contest between him and Gallrein, calling it “a referendum on his record.” He said, “They’re either going to be voting for me or voting against me.”

The Kentucky primary has also become another test of how far Trump’s influence reaches inside the Republican Party. The president has backed multiple challengers to GOP incumbents he views as insufficiently loyal.

Massie has been a frequent target of Trump’s criticism. In a Truth Social post over the weekend, Trump called Massie “weak and pathetic” and the “worst ‘Republican’ Congressman in history,” while urging support for Gallrein.

Massie’s record has drawn scrutiny beyond the headline feud. The article notes that Massie voted against Trump’s major legislative package last summer and pressed the Justice Department to release files related to financier and convicted s** offender Jeffrey Epstein.

For his part, Gallrein has pledged to “stand shoulder to shoulder” with Trump if elected.

The rally in Hebron turned a personal moment—Hegseth’s story about being warned he’d face opponents—into a campaign pitch, with Gallrein positioned as the kind of “reinforcement” Hegseth says Trump is looking for and Massie cast as the obstacle voters should reject on May 19.
