Hegseth Calls Protesters “Ingrates” as Guard Speech Turns Chaotic

Hegseth calls – Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth condemned protesters as “ingrates” and “ingratitude” during a Washington, D.C., event honoring National Guard members. The speech was drowned out by demonstrators as service members waited in 90-plus-degree heat after Hegseth arr

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth arrived late to a ceremony in Washington. D.C. on Thursday. leaving National Guard members waiting in 90-plus-degree heat at Meridian Hill Park before he finally addressed them. By the time he turned toward the demonstrators gathered outside. the noise wasn’t accidental—it was loud enough to overwhelm his remarks.

“Thank you for your dedication,” Hegseth began, before shifting his attention to the protesters. “This background noise this morning is perfect,” he said. “It’s the sound of ingrates. of ingratitude. of people who are so blinded by ideology they can’t see law and order and common sense in front of them.”.

He continued, targeting what he framed as the crowd’s motives. “That there’s nothing ideological about this group,” Hegseth said. “There’s nothing political about this exercise. Law and order is something all Americans deserve.”

Footage from the scene showed anger directed largely at Hegseth and other administration officials at the event. as he faced shouts of “shame. shame. shame” and other insults when he left. The language he used—his insistence that the situation was about order. not politics—came as protesters took over the moment the defense secretary was supposed to deliver his message to troops.

The gathering was meant to recognize National Guard members deployed to Washington to help carry out President Donald Trump’s anti-crime operation in the capital. Trump launched the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force in March of 2025. describing a crackdown on what he called “crime. bloodshed. bedlam and squalor” affecting the district.

Trump’s argument at the time was that lawlessness was rampant across Washington. But the record on crime rates doesn’t match the same level of urgency: crime rates in the District of Columbia had actually hit their lowest point in decades. even as the administration framed the task force as a response to a worsening crisis. Trump and his team have still touted a historic drop in violent crime since then. though outside analysis has questioned the impact of the National Guard’s presence.

In the aftermath of Thursday’s confrontation. the contrast was stark: service members waiting in extreme heat for a ceremony that quickly turned into a public clash over the administration’s broader anti-crime push. What Hegseth called “background noise” became the central sound of the day—turning a recognition event into a political fight played out in real time.

  1. Sounds like he showed up late and then acted like the protesters were the problem. If it was “law and order,” why couldn’t he handle a crowd for 2 minutes?

  2. Wait so the protesters drowned out his speech… but they’re “blinded by ideology”? Kinda ironic. Also wasn’t the Guard there to help with anti-crime, not get dragged into politics? Heat or not, shame on both sides I guess.

  3. I don’t even care what the speech said, he called them ingrates and then left, that’s literally disrespect to the troops. And honestly, if they were trying to honor the National Guard, why would the anti-crime task force stuff even be part of it? DC crime being “lowest in decades” makes all this feel like a manufactured showdown for TV…
