Storms could bring flash flooding, gusty winds and power outages to the D.C. region Monday, with daily chances for showers and thunderstorms continuing this week.
The D.C. region could see another round of wet weather Monday, with heavy thunderstorms and rain bringing the potential for flash flooding.
Not everyone will see rain, but areas that do could experience heavy downpours, gusty winds and localized flash flooding, 7News First Alert Meteorologist Jordan Evans said.
“We’ll see a couple of storms develop along that, especially south of I-66,” Evans said, adding that he expects the rain coverage to be lower than it was Sunday.
Cloudy skies are expected to give way to some afternoon sunshine, with temperatures in the mid- to upper 80s and heat index values into the 90s.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has issued a heat alert for the District until 8 p.m., because of the risk of heat-related illnesses.
The storms could also bring down trees and cause power outages. A large tree limb fell in Montgomery County on Sunday, pulling down wires and damaging a utility pole. A downed tree was also reported on Clara Barton Parkway between Chain Bridge and the Glen Echo turnaround.
“If they do develop over an urban area or somewhere with poor drainage, we could see flooding issues again,” said Kevin Rodriguez, a lead meteorologist for the National Weather Service’s Baltimore/Washington office.
He said Sunday’s storms in the D.C. region produced life-threatening flash floods.
“We had several rounds of storms that each were very efficient rainmakers that ended up producing 2 to 3 1/2 inches of rain over that portion there in the western D.C. suburbs,” Rodriguez said.
Clouds will be slow to clear Monday evening, with mostly cloudy skies lingering into early Tuesday.
The National Weather Service said daily chances of showers and thunderstorms return Tuesday evening and continue into Wednesday morning.
Wednesday will be sunny, with temperatures in the upper 80s. According to Evans, the warmer weather will likely make the atmosphere more unstable, increasing the chances for additional showers and thunderstorms.
Thursday will be partly cloudy, with isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms possible.
Evans said the unsettled weather pattern could continue into the weekend with daily chances for afternoon thunderstorms. However, rain is not expected all day, everyday.

A few more breaks in the clouds could lead to more sunshine and slightly hotter temperatures. However, this will likely further destabilize the atmosphere leading to additional chances for showers and a few isolated storms. Wet weather is expected throughout the day.
