In the mid-18th century, carbon dioxide concentrations were around 280 parts per million. This year, they surpassed 430 ppm. Historically, the U.S. has been the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitter—meaning the nation’s climate story is also partly a national emissions story.
Warming doesn’t arrive everywhere in the same way. Some parts of the U.S. warm faster than others. Some areas get wetter, while others become drier. Winter snows have declined while downpours have increased. Hurricanes that batter U.S. shores are becoming stronger, bringing larger floods.
But when summer arrives. heat is the clearest link to global warming—and the temperature record going back to the late 1800s shows a shift beyond ordinary seasonal change. Summer temperatures are higher across the country overall. and heat waves last longer. are more intense. and happen more frequently than in the past.
That pattern shows up in cities people know well. The 50 largest U.S. cities experience twice as many heat waves they did in the 1980s. In Philadelphia—the city where the Declaration of Independence was signed and the Constitution was ratified—the average July temperature has risen by 4.4 degrees F just since 1970. Kids growing up there today experience four more heat waves every summer than their grandparents did.
In the 1770s, record-setting chances between heat and cold were roughly equal. Now, heat records are twice as likely. The heat wave pushing temperatures into the triple digits over the July Fourth weekend is described as a case where climate change has “loaded the dice”—an event climate scientists say would have been virtually impossible in the U.S. when the nation was founded.
Those conclusions come from the World Weather Attribution research group. Scientists from that team said the combination of heat and high humidity would have been “virtually impossible” when the U.S. was founded. Theodore Keeping. an extreme weather and wildfire researcher at Imperial College London. said: “On America’s 250th birthday. our study gives a clear reality check. ” in a statement about their analysis of the heat wave.
Because heat is the deadliest weather phenomenon, the stakes are immediate rather than abstract. Authorities have warned people celebrating to take precautions: avoid being outside at the hottest times of day. stay in air conditioning as much as possible. and stay hydrated and aware of signs of heat illness.
The message from climate researchers and environmental advocates lands in the same place—this isn’t only about what happened in the past. It’s about what comes next. Friederike Otto, a World Weather Attribution researcher also of Imperial College London, said: “Climate change is here. It’s already impacting the things we enjoy in our everyday lives. and it will continue to get worse the longer we drag out the inevitable transition to net zero emissions.”.
The heat wave is one moment. The long temperature climb behind it is something else entirely—built from fossil fuel emissions that helped power the Industrial Revolution and left carbon dioxide levels rising from around 280 parts per million in the mid-18th century to above 430 ppm this year.
