Hayden Panettiere’s – In her debut memoir “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” Hayden Panettiere recounts casting shakeups on “Panic Room,” first relationships in the spotlight, and tense rhythms on set—while insisting she was “terrified” to finally tell her story.
Hayden Panettiere didn’t rush toward her debut memoir. In a cover story published in May 2026, the 36-year-old actress said she was “terrified” to tell her story—and that the first thought that hit her was whether she was “ready to write a book about my life.”
“The first thought that went through my head is. ‘Am I ready to write a book about my life?’” Panettiere told Us Weekly. “Then I started thinking through my life and going, ‘Gosh, truth is stranger than fiction. I have so many stories already to share.’ I hope that by sharing them in this book. that it helps people to overcome the obstacles they’re going through.”.
The memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” leans into the highs and downs of Panettiere’s life—and the celebrity storylines she found herself inside. In it, she name-dropped friends, exes, and famous neighbors while revisiting the moments that didn’t feel like they belonged to anyone but her.
Panettiere’s first “celebrity close call” centers on the film world—specifically. “Panic Room.” She wrote that she was cast as Nicole Kidman’s daughter in the movie. After Kidman hurt herself on set, Panettiere said she was forced to pull out, and production halted. She also wrote that there was apparently a conversation about Angelina Jolie joining the film.
Eventually, Jodie Foster replaced Kidman in the film, but Panettiere’s casting didn’t survive the switch. According to Panettiere’s book. she was recast with Kristen Stewart. and producers didn’t think Panettiere looked enough like Foster. She wrote that she “never got an explanation as to why. ” adding that “at the time. I accepted it. even though I was incredibly sad.”.
Romance shows up in the memoir as well, starting with a relationship Panettiere described as her first Hollywood boyfriend. At the height of “Heroes” and “Laguna Beach. ” she recalled Stephen Colletti being her “first Hollywood boyfriend.” She wrote that she “didn’t really” watch his show when it was on TV. but that she saw him in a magazine and her publicist introduced them.
Then there’s Lindsay Lohan, someone Panettiere remembered with a kind of wonder. She wrote that it was “mesmerizing” watching Lohan during the early 2000s. Panettiere said she was “around 13” when she first met Lindsay and that Lohan was always warm and friendly. even as Panettiere viewed her as “one of the consummate cool girls.” Panettiere recalled watching Lohan from across the room. convinced she was “born to be in situations like this.”.
Panettiere’s “Heroes” years also brought Milo Ventimiglia into focus. She and Ventimiglia “became a thing” while doing international press for “Heroes. ” when she was 18 and their age gap became headline material. Eventually, he broke up with her. In her memoir. Panettiere wrote that she knew she “wasn’t really in love with Milo. ” but that the relationship was “something stable” in her life at the time—until “He’d pulled the rug out from under me.”.
The memoir also touches a chat with Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis. Panettiere recalled speaking with him and wrote that “he was way too old for me.” She claimed that she and Kiedis were on the verge of crossing a line from “harmless flirtation into something more intentional.”
Outside of relationships, Panettiere’s celebrity world extended into everyday life. She recalled living close by Bill Murray and Bjork when moving to a house in Congers, New York.
Production stories bring more names and uneven rhythms. starting with “Scream 4.” Panettiere worked with longtime friends Emma Roberts and Rory Culkin on the film. where she debuted as Kirby Reed. She also wrote that Neve Campbell rented a property with cottages on it for the cast. where Campbell did mushrooms with her friends and invited David Arquette over.
And in television, Panettiere said “Nashville” didn’t feel like the show that made her famous. She noted that working on “Nashville” was different from “Heroes.” They were not “one big happy family,” she wrote. Panettiere said she wasn’t close to anyone on the cast and that she “couldn’t figure it out.”.
Taken together. the memoir reads like a record of proximity—famous faces. high-stakes casting decisions. and moments that lingered long after filming stopped. Panettiere’s opening message to readers is that the story is coming after fear. and that the truth is messier than any script: “Gosh. truth is stranger than fiction.”.
