Hathaway heads to Panthers as Flyers trade draft picks

Hathaway traded – Garnet Hathaway was traded by the Philadelphia Flyers to the Florida Panthers on Thursday. Philadelphia will receive draft picks spanning the 2026 and 2027 NHL Drafts, while the Panthers add a veteran forward to their group as the season approaches.
On Thursday, the Philadelphia Flyers moved Garnet Hathaway out of the organization and into Florida—swapping a veteran forward for future draft ammunition.
The trade sends Hathaway to the Florida Panthers in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft and a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft. Florida will also receive a sixth-round pick in the 2026 draft as part of the deal.
Philadelphia will keep 50 percent of Hathaway’s contract. He has one year remaining on a two-year, $4.8 million contract he signed with the Flyers on July 1, 2024. Hathaway can become an unrestricted free agent after next season.
Florida general manager Bill Zito framed the move as a fit for how the Panthers want to play. “Garnet is a physical and highly competitive player who will complement our group well,” Zito said. “We’re excited to add his veteran presence to our group for the upcoming season.”
The numbers show what Florida is buying in the near term. The 34-year-old forward recorded three points (one goal, two assists) in 66 games with the Flyers this season, and added two points (one goal, one assist) in eight Stanley Cup Playoff games.
Hathaway’s path to the NHL started outside the usual draft spotlight. Signed as an undrafted free agent by the Calgary Flames on April 13. 2015. he has totaled 163 points (76 goals. 87 assists) across 672 NHL games with the Flames. Washington Capitals. Boston Bruins and Flyers. In the playoffs, he has eight points (four goals, four assists) in 39 postseason games.
This deal also lands inside a busy stretch for the Panthers. It marks Florida’s third trade since Sunday—when the Panthers acquired a first-round pick in the 2026 draft and a conditional second-round pick in the 2027 draft from the Seattle Kraken for forward Mackie Samoskevich. Florida then went on to acquire forward Brady Tkachuk from the Ottawa Senators for two first-round picks in the 2026 draft. a second-round pick in the 2027 draft. and a conditional first-round pick in the 2029 NHL Draft.
