Tavares Harrington didn’t wait long to turn the recruiting spotlight in Michigan’s direction.

On Friday, the Chicago, Illinois, cornerback announced his commitment to the Michigan Wolverines, choosing the program over the Ole Miss Rebels, the Auburn Tigers, and the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Harrington arrives as a four-star prospect with a 90 score on 247Sports. His placement puts him 10th among players in the state of Illinois. 25th among cornerbacks. and 190th in the entire class. His composite score is 0.9448, ranking him seventh overall, 15th among his position group, and 124th in his class.

The scouting read on Harrington is built around the traits Michigan is often eager to find—speed to match route concepts. length to contest throws. and a style that can translate across defensive looks. 247Sports’ Scouting Director Andrew Ivins described him as a “reactionary outside corner” with the kind of “length that everyone covets these days. ” adding that he can “bump and run” or play off-man in a Cover 2 look. Ivins also said Harrington anticipates throws and “drives to the catch point. ” arriving consistently. while noting that “deep speed can present issues.”.

On the run and in the playmaking moments, Harrington’s résumé comes into focus. Ivins said he became “much more involved as a run defender” during his junior campaign and showed he could “wrangle larger ball carriers down on the perimeter.” Before his final two years. the numbers were already building toward that profile: he broke up 15 passes as a sophomore. then came down with three interceptions as a junior. Ivins also cited his willingness to wrestle for leverage with his pedal and lateral quickness. and finished by projecting him as a taller zone cornerback with “multi-year starter upside” and “safety flex” potential based on how he tackles and tracks the football.

Those production markers were backed by the specific stat lines Harrington posted. He finished his junior season in 2025 with 50 tackles, nine pass breakups, and three interceptions. In 2024, as a sophomore, he recorded 39 tackles, 15 pass breakups, and one interception.

For Michigan, the commitment lands at a moment of transition and ambition. Kyle Whittingham is the head coach overseeing the Wolverines’ future after spending the last 32 years at Utah. Michigan is coming off a 9-4 record in 2025 and missed the cut for the College Football Playoff. The Wolverines closed the season with a 41-27 loss to the Texas Longhorns in the Citrus Bowl.
