Harold Landry to begin season on PUP list, Patriots swing trade for offensive tackle

Patriots edge rusher Harold Landry will begin the regular-season on the physically unable to perform list.

Landry missed all of OTAs, minicamp, and training camp as he continues to recover from a knee injury. He was seen at practice last week working on conditioning drills.

Special teams ace Brenden Schooler, who also missed training camp, will begin the season on the non football injury list.

Both players’ statuses for the season opener in Seattle are unclear at the moment.

“They’re here. They’re rehabbing. They’re working through the return to play,” coach Mike Vrabel said earlier this month about Landry and Schooler. “Where they are for Week One, they won’t be out there today, so that’s the only update I can give you. They won’t play in the game this week, and I think they’re just continuing to work to try to get there. When they get there, obviously they’ll be there.”

Landry led the Patriots in sacks last season with 8.5 despite being hampered by the knee injury that ultimately hampered his production during the back half of the year.

The Patriots have not looked particularly deep at edge rusher during camp. Elijah Ponder had a quiet summer, rookie Gabe Jacas missed a significant amount of time while addressing injury concerns during contract negotiations. The Patriots signed veteran Dre’Mont Jones during the offseason, but they also lost K’Lavon Chaisson.

Trade for tackle

The Patriots made a trade on cutdown day, sending a 2027 sixth-round pick to the Vikings for offensive lineman Walter Rouse and a 2027 seventh round pick.

Rouse, 25, was a sixth-round pick in 2024. The 6-foot-6, 314-pound offensive tackle has appeared in eight games over the past two years. He was in a reserve role in Minnesota. He has not started an NFL game yet.

The Patriots kept ten offensive linemen on the 53-man roster including Rouse. Will Campbell and Morgan Moses return as starters. First-round pick Caleb Lomu, who has had an up-and-down camp while learning both tackle spots, should be a depth piece as he continues to develop.

Marcus Bryant and Dametrious Crownover also made the team. Bryant, however, has been placed on injured reserve to start the season. Bryant was expected to key reserve for New England, functioning as a swing tackle. He’ll be out for at least the first four games.

The Patriots cut 36 players on Sunday afternoon, trimming their roster to the 53-man limit.
