Guardians list Kwan for bereavement, add Fairchild

CLEVELAND — The Guardians didn’t announce the news quietly.
Friday brought a major personnel shift before the weekend, with Steven Kwan placed on the bereavement/family medical emergency list. The move means the outfielder may miss the entirety of this weekend’s series against the Red Sox at Progressive Field. a stretch Kwan would have been expected to be part of.
Guardians manager Stephen Vogt summed up the reason the team stepped back from baseball for a moment. “Obviously our thoughts are with Kwany and his family as they’re going through their situation,” Vogt said. “We’re going to miss Steven this weekend.”
To adjust immediately, Cleveland selected fellow outfielder Stuart Fairchild from Triple-A Columbus. Fairchild had signed with the Guardians on a Minor League deal on Dec. 20 and was a non-roster invitee in Spring Training. During that time, he also represented Chinese Taipei in the World Baseball Classic.
The roster move wasn’t only about replacing a bat or a glove for the coming days. It also came with a separate transaction that shaped the math for Cleveland’s 40-man roster. The Guardians transferred infielder Gabriel Arias (left hamstring strain) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL. creating procedural space for Fairchild.
Kwan’s placement on the bereavement/family medical emergency list places him in a window of three to seven days. That range is exactly why this weekend’s series now looks different—without him, and with Cleveland preparing to open a quick turnaround afterward.
The Guardians will open a three-game series against the Yankees in New York on Tuesday.
Fairchild, who was not in the Guardians’ starting lineup on Friday, arrives with a particular kind of resume the organization has valued: versatility across the outfield. He has played each outfield spot in the Majors, with 112 career appearances in center field, 82 in left and 73 in right.
That versatility matters even more in a roster moment that has the Guardians leaning into a mix of handedness. Fairchild hits right-handed. and Cleveland currently has just three other righty-only hitters on the active roster: David Fry. Austin Hedges and Rhys Hoskins. Cleveland’s only right-handed hitting outfield options were switch-hitter Angel Martínez and third catcher David Fry.
On the hitting side, Fairchild carries a career slash line of .223/.305/.384 in the Majors. Against left-handed pitching, his numbers read .246/.343/.404 across 329 plate appearances.
At Triple-A Columbus this season, the production that earned the promotion is easier to see. Over 40 games, Fairchild slashed .289/.417/.479 with eight doubles, two triples, five home runs and 26 walks against 32 strikeouts. He made 13 appearances in center, 12 in right and eight in left.
“It’s a full-circle moment,” Fairchild said, speaking about his path into Cleveland and how it feels to arrive in a role that already feels familiar.
He also described his success in the minors as staying steady—playing the way he’d been asked to play. “I felt like I was just being me. playing pretty much every day. ” Fairchild said of his run with the Clippers. “Not trying to do too much. Just trying to enjoy where I was at, being where my feet were. They’ve got a great group down there. I think that made it easy just to relax and just play well.”.
There’s another thread connecting Fairchild to his new manager. and it goes back to his first ever day in the major leagues. His MLB debut came with the D-backs on July 6, 2021, when he entered as a pinch-runner for Vogt. The sequence is still described in a simple line: Vogt led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a single off Colorado’s Daniel Bard. Fairchild entered to run. and he later scored when Arizona’s David Peralta was hit by the pitch with the bases loaded.
For Fairchild, the details turn into something more personal when you consider what he said about the contract decision. “He gave me a phone call before I even decided [where to sign this winter]. expressing the Guardians’ interest in me. That went a long way in my decision. I’ve felt welcome ever since I’ve been here.”.
Kwan’s absence will be the focus this weekend, but the Guardians are already building a bridge to keep momentum moving—by lifting Fairchild from Columbus and adjusting the roster to absorb both Kwan’s medical/bereavement timeline and Arias’s placement on the 60-day IL.
