For weeks, NBA talk has hung over Memphis like a question nobody could quite answer: were the Grizzlies really locked in downtown, or was a move to Nashville quietly gathering momentum?

Now, the loudest version of that uncertainty seems to be fading. A new report indicates the team will stay in Memphis for decades. with details tied to the FedExForum and what’s coming “and beyond.” The shift lands as bad news for players and fans who’d hoped relocation chatter would turn into something more than noise.

Duncan Williams. interim president of the Chamber. told an audience Tuesday that he’d recently met with Grizzlies president Jason Wexler. Williams said he had the chance to see plans for what the franchise is planning at the FedExForum and beyond. The message from that meeting is blunt: whatever debate surfaced earlier this year about the Grizzlies’ long-term home. the direction is staying in place for the foreseeable future.

Earlier in the year. there were reports that many NBA stars hated Memphis and wished the Grizzlies would relocate to Nashville. That triggered discussion about the Grizzlies’ arena plans and whether the franchise would remain in downtown Memphis. The latest update pushes against the idea of an exit. suggesting this franchise relationship with the city is built to last.

And it all traces back to the first spark that set players-and-people talking. LeBron James lit the fire with his comments. He later clarified that his issue was not with Memphis, but with one hotel. Even with that clarification, the broader storyline had already started moving. None of the dislike was described as being directed at the Grizzlies themselves. Many players. in their own accounts. have said the organization is fine—while the city is what landed on their no-trade list.

Ja Morant has led the Grizzlies for several years, bringing a level of excitement that the city has been proud to show off. Yet none of that has been enough, at least so far, to dislodge the reality that Memphis keeps showing up on players’ “no-trade” discussions.

The fallout from James’ earlier comments also spilled beyond the locker room. Memphis residents pushed back, turning the debate into something more personal. Still, through all the clamor, there does does not seem to be any plan for the team to move.

When the Grizzlies moved from Vancouver to Memphis, the city gained its first—and, at the moment, only—team. Nashville, by contrast, has two professional teams. With this latest report pointing to decades in Memphis. that balance between the two cities looks set to remain unchanged for years to come.

The meeting between Williams and Wexler, the FedExForum plans “and beyond,” and the absence of any concrete relocation plan combine into one clear takeaway for Memphis: the franchise’s next chapter isn’t about leaving. It’s about building where it already sits—downtown, for the long run.
