When the Connecticut Sun needed something to change, Brittney Griner delivered it twice—on the scoreboard and in the record book.
Connecticut snapped a seven-game losing streak by blowing out the Chicago Sky 92-63 at Mohegan Sun Arena on Monday. The Sun improved to 3-11, while Chicago suffered its sixth straight loss and dropped to 4-12.
But the night carried an extra weight for Griner. The 35-year-old became the WNBA’s all-time leader in blocks with 878 swats and counting, surpassing Margo Dydek, whose record had stood since 2008.
Griner’s stat line matched the magnitude of the moment. She finished with 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists and four blocks. In the postgame conference, asked about the latest milestone, she looked visibly moved—especially because of who was watching.
“Having my family here is big for me. Everything I do, I do for them. So, for them to see that (was special), sitting there at courtside, my wife is amazing. I have a lot of emotions right now,” said Griner in a video posted by The IX Sports’ Deyscha Smith.
“But also, getting the win here, we wanted to put on a good show for these fans, and I hope they know that we are working hard every single day. I said it the other day, we are working so hard.”
Griner also spoke with her son, Bash, present at the press conference as the record was reached.
The win didn’t erase the bigger reality in Connecticut yet. Griner signed a one-year contract with the Sun in the offseason after her one-year stop with the Atlanta Dream. and the numbers have still been tough for the team. Connecticut has been giving up 89.8 points per outing. which is third-worst in the league—even with Griner patrolling the paint as a two-time Defensive Player of the Year.
Still, Griner’s individual season has been productive compared to last year’s meager numbers. She is averaging 12.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.9 blocks. She ranks as the league’s third-best shot-blocker. trailing only A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces and Emily Engstler of the Portland Fire.
Now, the Sun move forward after this reset win. Connecticut is set to host the Washington Mystics on Friday.
