Gorkys Hernandez posted the news on Instagram on Saturday, and the heartbreak came through immediately.
The former MLB player, who played in parts of six seasons between 2012 and 2019, revealed that his wife, Deisy Maria Tovar De Hernandez, was killed during the devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela earlier this week.
In the caption that accompanied a photo of Deisy. Hernandez called her the “queen” of his life. writing that she was “the most beautiful. beautiful. precious. the best woman in the world.” He said she always looked after him during hard times. He added that she can now “fly high with God. ” and asked her to continue to “guide me to move forward and lift our family.”.
Hernandez also tied Deisy to the place where she was when the earthquakes hit. Deisy was reportedly at the Hotel Eduards in Macuto when the deadly double earthquake occurred. He was in Venezuela as well, set to play a game for the Venezuela league’s La Guaira Delfines.
Players reportedly rushed back to the hotel to look for family members, but it appeared Deisy couldn’t be saved.
Hernandez spent the majority of his MLB career with the San Francisco Giants, and he also played for the Boston Red Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates and Miami Marlins. It’s unclear when he and Deisy got married.

I saw this on IG too and I’m just like… why are earthquakes always hitting places with hotels?? Poor guy. Praying for his family or whatever.
Wait, so he was playing in MLB the whole time? Like I thought he was still in the big leagues. If she was at Hotel Eduards in Macuto then maybe the building was the issue, not the quake? Idk, just sucks either way. RIP.
Devastating. I always forget Venezuela has earthquakes until something like this happens. Also “La Guaira Delfines” sounds like a made-up team name to me for some reason but anyway… I feel so bad for him, the caption stuff about “queen” and God is gonna hit hard.
