GOP Governor Candidate’s Daughter Rakes Mom Over The Coals: ‘Sounds Like Trump’

The daughter of Minnesota GOP gubernatorial candidate Lisa Demuth appears to be distancing herself from her mother’s political views yet again, this time by drawing parallels with President Donald Trump.

On Wednesday, Shelisa Demuth shared a link to a Minnesota Public Radio story comparing Lisa Demuth’s stance on her state’s shortage of affordable housing to that of Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Sen. Amy Klobuchar.

Though Shelisa Demuth didn’t identify either candidate by name, she wrote on Threads: “One of these candidates sounds like Trump and the other sounds like she’s considered the topic more than once before and perhaps has studied the issue with experts who can advise on it. I’ll let you decide who’s who.”

Lisa Demuth, who currently serves as Minnesota House Speaker, secured her state’s Republican nomination for governor last month. She beat out MyPillow founder Mike Lindell, a longtime Trump loyalist who had been enthusiastically endorsed by the president, and healthcare technology exec Kendall Qualls.

A strategic communications executive who in 2003 was among the survivors of a shooting at Minnesota’s Rocori High School, Shelisa Demuth has previously spoken out against Lisa Demuth’s conservative politics.

In January, she criticized her mother’s Facebook post condemning protesters who had disrupted a Minnesota church service to call attention to Trump’s immigration crackdown.

“Injustice to anyone is injustice to everyone. You should be outraged,” she wrote in part, per Newsweek.

And in May, she denounced her mother’s refusal to bring a gun control bill that would regulate the ownership and sale of semiautomatic rifles and high-capacity magazines to the House floor for a vote. The bill had been passed in the Minnesota Senate days earlier.

“Imagine being the first House Speaker in state history who is also the mother of two school shooting victims and conveniently deferring a gun control bill to the next legislative session,” Shelisa Demuth wrote on Threads, later adding: “Correction: my sister and I were survivors, not victims. But still.”

She expanded on her thoughts in a May 20 op-ed for The Minnesota Star Tribune, which was headlined: “What my mother got wrong on gun reform.”

“Professionally, my mother prides herself on being fair,” Shelisa Demuth wrote. “She is now running for governor, an office that will require her to bring opponents to the table to negotiate the tough issues, not avoid them. The session she just closed will be her legacy as speaker.”

She went on to note: “The question it leaves behind is not a partisan one. It belongs to every parent who sends a child to school, every neighbor who has attended a vigil, every voter deciding in November what kind of future we will build.”
