Google stumbles on word definitions as AI Overviews take over

For the third time—or the second, depending on how patient you were—Google didn’t show the definition you came for. Instead of a clean dictionary snippet, searches for the words “disregard,” “stop,” and “ignore” now surface an AI Overview and an unusually blank-looking result page.

The change arrived as Google began rolling out an updated, even more AI-focused search experience at I/O 2026. But this particular hiccup has a frustratingly simple feel: type a word and expect a definition, and you get an AI summary with lots of empty space.

Engadget staff were able to reproduce the behavior with their own personal Google searches. In Incognito Mode. Google responded correctly once—showing the usual snippet with the definition—but failed a second time and returned an AI Overview again. That inconsistency is part of what has made the issue spread quickly through social media.

Even when the definition itself doesn’t appear at the top, the dictionary links may still be there. Links to online dictionaries show up under the incorrect results, but users have to scroll past the AI Overview or a grid of articles to reach the traditional list of links.

Google has been contacted for more information about what’s behind the glitch and what attempts are underway to fix it. The company has not offered additional details in the reporting so far, and Engadget said it would update the story if it hears back.

In the bigger picture. not showing a definition isn’t as severe as some of the earlier AI Overviews problems Google ran into when the feature first launched. One example cited is Google recommending people put glue on pizza. Still. the moment is hard to miss: the issue points to an awkward transition as Google moves from being the “referrer” that sends people to other websites into something closer to an all-in-one AI assistant—whether it’s handling everyday dictionary lookups the way users expect or not.

  1. I swear this started when they made everything an AI answer. Now it’s just scrolling simulator. If the definition is “disregard” then why am I searching at all?

  2. Wait so it only works in incognito sometimes? That sounds like a cookie thing not an “AI glitch.” Or maybe it’s the search terms, like “ignore” triggers it lol. Either way it’s annoying.

  3. This is why I don’t trust search results anymore. First they’re recommending weird stuff like glue on pizza (prob fake but still), then they hide the dictionary snippet. Next thing you know you type “stop” and it gives you an essay about feelings or whatever.
