Google rolls redesigned Workspace icons with gradients and tweaks

Google Workspace app icons are starting to roll out with a new gradient look, some single-color designs, and noticeable redesigns across Drive, Keep, and Gmail—while a few icons like Docs, Sheets, and Slides keep much of their existing color scheme.

Google Workspace apps have been quietly changing their look—and if your dashboard is suddenly less flat than it was yesterday, you’re not imagining it.

The redesigned Workspace app icons that leaked last month are now rolling out more widely.. The update shows up as a new gradient style. fading from lighter to darker shades. instead of the same flat tone throughout.. It’s a visual shift that matches the direction of the redesigned Google logo that launched a year ago.

Some apps get a more obvious makeover. Google Chat, Meet, and Calendar have switched from a rainbow look to a single color. The practical effect is a cleaner separation between icons—though for users who rely on quick visual recognition, it could also make them harder to distinguish at a glance.

Other icons don’t move as dramatically. Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides keep the same colors and general approach. One change still stands out for Sheets and Slides: both icons are switched to landscape mode, which mirrors how most people use those apps.

The most noticeable shape edits land in a few places.. Google Drive receives a significant overhaul with rounded corners.. It also loses the red spot it previously had in the bottom right corner.. Google Keep goes in an even bigger direction: the icon drops the bulb-in-a-rectangle treatment and becomes a yellow light bulb on its own.. Gmail gets a cleaner look as well, though it hasn’t changed too much compared to the old version.

The update may sound cosmetic, but for people who live in these icons all day, small changes are surprisingly personal.. Google Keep. in particular. is one of those quick-hit tools people reach for without thinking—so the new icon shape is likely to feel unfamiliar for a while.. Still, the overall redesign trades busy elements for a cleaner visual system, one gradient at a time.

  1. I saw the gradient thing and thought my phone updated wrong. Tabs are gonna look “cleaner” until you can’t tell Drive from Keep at a glance.

  2. Okay so Docs/Sheets/Slides stay mostly the same but Sheets and Slides are landscape now? That’s kind of backwards to me because I use them like buttons, not like… actual pages. Also losing the little red spot on Drive feels random, like why remove it.

  3. This is probably just so they can push people toward the new Workspace logo stuff and get ad money off the UI refresh or whatever. I don’t care what direction the gradient goes, I just want it to stop changing without telling me. Yesterday my Gmail looked different and today my muscle memory is mad.
