Google Phone app adds spoofing alerts for Pixels

A teardown of the Google Phone app suggests Google is building a new phone number spoofing detection feature for Pixel users, warning when a caller may be posing as someone from your contacts.
A call that looks like it’s from someone you trust can be the easiest kind of scam to fall for. And as phone number spoofing keeps showing up in more scam playbooks, Google is reportedly working on a new way to flag it—right inside the Google Phone app on Pixel devices.
A recent teardown of the Google Phone app by Android Authority found evidence of an upcoming spoofing detection system in version 222.0.913376317.. Buried in the code are strings indicating the phone could warn users when “Someone may be pretending to call from your contact’s number.” Another string suggests the user may also have the option to hang up the call immediately.
Phone number spoofing—also called caller ID spoofing—works by tricking a phone into displaying a familiar or saved contact number. even though the call is actually coming from a different number.. The reason it’s effective is simple: users are more likely to pick up when the call appears to come from family members. friends. or authorized personnel such as a doctor or a bank representative.
The discovery lands after Google recently announced a broader package of security features.. Those included verified financial calls, OTP protection, real-time malware detection, APK scanning in Chrome, and more.. The timing matters because it places this new call spoofing work alongside other defenses aimed at stopping common scam techniques before they do damage.
The pattern is clear in the product mix: Google is building multiple protections that meet scams at different points—Call Screening and spam detection for unwanted calls, and now a spoofing detection warning tied specifically to contact-number impersonation.
For Pixel owners. the takeaway is that the phones are already being positioned as some of the strongest anti-scam devices. thanks to existing tools such as Call Screening and spam detection.. There’s still no word on when the spoofing detection feature will roll out. but the code evidence suggests Google isn’t done tightening the net against impersonation.
