A new smart display for Google Home may be closer than many users think, after code found inside the Google Home iOS app pointed to a device name that sounds like a spiritual successor to the Nest Hub.

The hint centers on references to something called “Google Home Display” hidden in the Google Home app for iOS.. While the discovery doesn’t confirm a launch or even an official product, the branding itself stands out.. Google has been signaling that it’s moving away from the Nest label for upcoming smart home hardware. and this name tracks that direction.

In the same vein. the company’s next smart speaker also reportedly adopted a “Google Home” naming approach rather than sticking with Nest.. If the “Google Home Display” label is indeed intentional. it could mark a deliberate renaming of the familiar smart display category—potentially replacing the role Nest Hub devices have played in Google’s lineup.

Google hasn’t released a new Nest Hub model since the Nest Hub (2nd Gen) arrived in 2021. That gap has stretched long enough to spark continued speculation among Google Home users, many of whom have questioned whether the company quietly shifted away from dedicated smart displays altogether.

Over the past few years. some viewers of the ecosystem have looked to the Pixel Tablet as an alternative. especially because it can function as a smart display when docked.. Google never officially announced that Nest Hubs were being discontinued. but the lack of new hardware has kept doubt alive about whether the company was still investing in the standalone smart display space.

Late last year. Google Home Chief Product Officer Anish Kattukaran addressed that uncertainty by confirming that Google remains committed to smart displays.. He didn’t directly confirm a new product at the time. but said the company had more to share “soon. ” linking the timing to Gemini becoming more deeply integrated into the Google Home ecosystem.

That context matters because it suggests Google’s next push for smart displays may be less about simply refreshing a product design and more about expanding how assistant intelligence shows up in the home.. If Gemini integration is the priority. a new display could be built around more responsive. screen-based experiences rather than treating the display as a static companion.

Even so, the latest “Google Home Display” references come with important caveats.. App code can include experimental strings, internal names, or placeholders that never make it to retail.. And even if a real device is behind the name. a product tied to code discovery could still be months—or longer—away from public release.

Still. after years without a new Nest Hub and without a fully clear replacement for the category beyond docked tablet use. the emergence of “Google Home Display” inside Google Home’s iOS code is a meaningful sign.. It hints that Google may be reconsidering how it packages smart displays for the home—and doing it under the “Google Home” brand rather than the Nest name.
