Golf stars rush back as US Open is suspended

The US Open was suspended 30 minutes into the first round on Thursday after heavy fog rolled over the course in New York, sending 18 starters back to the clubhouse with the rest of the field facing major scheduling pressure.

The US Open didn’t even make it far into the morning before the course went quiet.

Play was halted just 30 minutes after the first round began on Thursday, when heavy fog descended on the course in New York. The stoppage came at 7:05am local time, with only 18 players having started their tournament.

Organizers now face a scheduling headache. With 156 players needing to complete a full round for the tournament to stay on schedule, a delay lasting beyond the initial window risks turning a single weather event into a logistical scramble across the week.

Early messages posted on X from the US Open account first told players to “hold in place” while the conditions were assessed. Then, at 7:25am, the golfers were brought back to the clubhouse as the fog’s impact became clear.

The uncertainty didn’t end with the first interruption. By 8am, the tournament was pushed back again, leaving players such as Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler waiting to learn when the third major championship of the year would resume.

Golfers who had stepped out onto the course expecting routine competition instead found themselves back in the clubhouse, watching the clock and hoping the fog would lift soon enough to keep the week on track.

  1. So they stopped it 30 minutes in… why not just play the back 9 later or something? 156 players full round schedule sounds made up lol.

  2. Wait Rory and Scottie were just sitting in the clubhouse like normal customers? I thought they’d have like a light show or something to keep play going. Also “hold in place” sounds sketchy, like are they in trouble?

  3. This is what happens when they build a course in New York that’s basically always humid and weird. They should’ve known the fog would come in, like just look outside?? I saw it on X and everyone was freaking out, then all of a sudden they’re “pushed back again” like… okay so when do we actually get to watch anything?
