God of War Laufey targets first half 2027 release

New reporting points to a launch in the first half of 2027 for God of War: Laufey—shifting attention from when it will arrive to what players will actually do when they finally get there, including playing as Faye in a combat system built around magic and envi
The wait for God of War: Laufey may be closer than many fans feared. Industry insider NateTheHate says the release window he has heard points to a launch sometime during the first half of 2027, even though Sony and Santa Monica Studio have not officially confirmed a date.
NateTheHate’s note is pointed but careful—“Last I heard the target was first half 2027. Could change but that was a hope at one point.”—and it lands alongside comments from Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier. Schreier’s message. as relayed in the same reporting. is blunt: the absence of a release date should not be read as proof that the project is years away. Together, the two threads suggest Sony may already be working toward a fairly concrete target.
If the first-half 2027 timing holds. God of War: Laufey would arrive roughly four and a half years after God of War Ragnarök. which launched in November 2022. For a modern PlayStation blockbuster—where long development cycles have become the norm—that gap would be a shorter stretch than many players have come to expect.
The character at the center of the franchise is the most immediate shift. For the first time in the series, players will take control of Faye—also known as Laufey the Just. Up to now, her presence has been woven through memories, stories, and the consequences of her decisions on Kratos and Atreus.
That changes in the reported approach to combat. Early gameplay footage suggests Santa Monica Studio is building a “very different combat system” around Faye’s abilities. Instead of Kratos’s brute-force style and weapon-focused fighting. Faye’s kit appears to lean heavily on magic and environmental manipulation.
The mechanics being described are striking: players will reportedly be able to freeze rivers. reshape terrain. and use the environment itself as part of combat encounters. The outcome. according to the reporting. is a faster and more agile combat style that’s meant to feel distinct from previous God of War protagonists.
The game’s world is equally part of the pitch. The story is set in a mysterious realm known as the Everywhen—described as an afterlife dimension that could expand the franchise beyond the locations explored during the Norse saga.
And then there’s the mythology question. Rumors surrounding God of War: Laufey suggest that while Norse mythology will remain central. elements inspired by Egyptian mythology could also appear. If that combination proves real. it would not just deepen the story—it would hint at a larger expansion of the God of War universe and potentially set up future entries.
Not everyone is fully sold on swapping Kratos for Faye as the lead. Reaction has been mixed. with some players eager to learn more about one of the series’ most mysterious figures. while others remain attached to Kratos and cautious about moving away from the character who has defined the franchise for two decades.
Sony has reportedly reassured players that Kratos remains important and is not being written out of future plans. For now, though, everything about timing remains unofficial—so the first-half 2027 window should be treated as a target, not a promise.
What matters is that a clearer timeline seems to be forming at all. If Sony really does have a launch target in mind already. fans may not need to wait long for the next major update. A PlayStation Showcase or State of Play later this year could be where the company finally turns the speculation into something playable.
