When Vladimir Fedorov walked into an internal meeting on Wednesday, he brought a message that sounded like a release valve—June had been GitHub’s “best month ever.”
The lift, he said, came as customers used more of GitHub’s Copilot AI coding tool. But the optimism was offered with a boundary: Fedorov declined to discuss the numbers because the company’s financial quarter is coming to a close. “June was by far our best month ever,” he told employees.
For Microsoft-owned GitHub, that rebound matters because the market it operates in is getting sharper by the month. GitHub is now up against fast-growing rivals such as Cursor. OpenAI’s Codex. and Anthropic’s Claude Code—tools designed to help write. edit. and fix software. Microsoft declined to comment.
Fedorov also pushed back on the idea that the usage surge should immediately translate into major price increases. He said he personally doesn’t think GitHub needs to raise prices much based on the spike in usage. Still, he stopped short of laying out any definitive pricing plans.
The shift that set the stage came on June 1, when GitHub changed how it charges customers for Copilot. Instead of billing with a flat rate per user for a fixed number of requests. the company moved to billing based on how much customers use the tool. GitHub’s change brought it in line with its AI coding rivals, many of which charge based on consumption.
GitHub—acquired by Microsoft in 2018—is widely used by engineers to store and manage code and collaborate on projects. The platform gained an early lead largely because of its popularity, giving it a foundation to build on as AI-assisted coding took off.
Yet the month’s bright news sits beside a less comfortable reality. In a separate internal meeting late last year, a Microsoft executive discussed the need to overhaul GitHub to compete with Cursor and Anthropic’s Claude Code, based on audio reviewed by Business Insider.
And performance strain has already left a mark. Due to increased usage, GitHub experienced dozens of major outages in 2026. To address capacity issues tied to that disruption, Microsoft is now turning to Amazon—its biggest cloud rival, according to Business Insider’s reporting.
