Gilas Women settle for silver in Asian Beach Games

Gilas Pilipinas Women’s 3×3 team lost to host China 13-21 in the Asian Beach Games gold match, finishing with silver after a spirited push late in the game.
MANILA, Philippines — The Gilas Pilipinas women’s 3×3 team couldn’t pull off a fourth gold medal for Team Philippines at the 6th Asian Beach Games, settling for silver after dropping the gold medal match to host China, 13-21, on Wednesday in Sanya.
From the start, China played with a level of physical presence that Gilas had to respect. The inside force of Hengyu Yang and the shooting touch of Fengyi Sun kept the Nationals chasing the game, even as Gilas tried to adjust its rhythm and defensive angles.
China jumped ahead early, building a 11-5 lead before the Philippines responded.. Mikka Cacho, described as the team’s bruiser in the flow of the match, energized the attack alongside the 3×3 experience of Kaye Pingol.. For a stretch, the offense looked faster and more direct, with Gilas attacking the basket and forcing China into tighter possessions.
Speed and pressure were clearly part of the plan.. Tantoy Ferrer and Gabi Bade also contributed in ways that opened lanes and kept the ball moving, but Gilas often found itself searching for the right outside looks.. When the perimeter shots didn’t fall consistently, the game became a matter of converting fewer opportunities rather than creating a steady stream.
The turning point came late, when Bade delivered a converted and-one that narrowed the gap to 16-12 with 3:34 left. Suddenly, the margin didn’t feel unreachable. But China’s attacking options stayed diverse enough to protect its lead, and Gilas ultimately ran out of chances to flip the momentum.
After the match, Gilas women 3×3 head coach Anton Altamirano pointed to the physical toll that can shape 3×3 games, especially when teams face heavy bodies and constant pressure.. He expressed satisfaction with the team’s overall effort, noting that the final stretch made a difference and that rest could have changed how the Nationals sustained their challenge.
From a standings perspective, the silver still matters.. The result kept Gilas in the conversation for elite beach-court play, but it also carried the sting of missing the top spot—something the program has learned can hinge on small margins in a short-format game.. A single run, one missed look from the outside, or one defensive misread can turn a close contest into a gap that becomes hard to close.
Cacho finished with five points, while Ferrer added four. Pingol and Bade posted two points each as Gilas tried to answer China’s size with pace, pressure, and selective scoring.
The women’s silver also softened the disappointment from the men’s side. Earlier, the Gilas men also fell to China with an identical scoreline, 13-21, leaving both teams on the second rung rather than the podium finish they were chasing.
For Gilas women, the silver carried extra weight because it marked their best finish since 2012, when they last reached the podium with a bronze medal.. That history turns every match into more than a single tournament stop—players know they’re not just playing for a day’s result, but for a place in the program’s longer arc.
Looking ahead, the key question is how quickly Gilas can recover and refine its shot-making balance.. Against a China team that can punish height and exploit space with sharp shooting, the Philippines will likely need to sustain its late-game energy and sharpen the outside execution that has the potential to stretch defenses and create cleaner drives.
