For the second straight day of lineup chess, the San Francisco Giants had to rearrange their rotation at the worst possible time—just as Tyler Mahle’s latest start ended with his numbers trending the wrong way.
On Friday, the Giants placed the right-hander on the 15-day injured list with a left hamstring strain. The club made the designation retroactive to Wednesday, turning what had been a nagging problem into a full roster solution.
The corresponding moves came quickly. Logan Webb was reinstated from the 15-day IL after dealing with right knee bursitis. Jung Hoo Lee was also activated from the 10-day IL following a back strain. restoring another key piece to the active group. Will Brennan, meanwhile, was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento. Victor Bericoto—called up previously when Lee was unavailable—remains on the active roster as a right-handed bench option.
Mahle’s injury may have surfaced during his most recent outing on Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. In that start, he allowed 3 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out 3 across 5 innings. It was his seventh loss of the season.
The Giants said Mahle is eligible to return from the IL in mid-June, though the recovery timeline will depend on further testing of the hamstring.
There’s more than just the injury driving the urgency. The $10MM free agent signing has scuffled through 11 starts, producing just one quality start. He has allowed more than 6 earned runs per nine innings and has been hit hard in his last four appearances. While he has struck out 23% of opposing hitters. his 8% swinging-strike rate suggests limited swing-and-miss upside. and that lack of separation has shown up in the form of 11 home runs allowed—ranked among the top 10 in the National League.
With Mahle sidelined, the Giants will look to keep their six-man rotation intact by turning to a starter from Triple-A Sacramento. The club also has options on hand: Trevor McDonald is performing well in a back-end role, and Adrian Houser is in rotation consideration.
The timing of the move leaves the Giants with an immediate decision—how to manage both the lineup and the momentum swings—while Mahle works through tests that will determine whether mid-June is reachable or simply a starting point.
