Unfortunately, the misfortunes just continue to pile up for the San Francisco Giants after pitcher Carson Whisenhunt left the game with an injury.
The San Francisco Giants have not been having a good season this year. Sitting at 53 wins and 78 losses this year, it’s all but guaranteed that the team will miss the postseason again. This will be the fifth consecutive year the Giants will miss the postseason since they were eliminated by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS in 2021.
Unfortunately, the misfortunes just continue to pile up for San Francisco, even though things are going well for them. The Giants got off to a 5-0 start against the Cincinnati Reds, going on the verge of upsetting a team with a better record than them. Carson Whisenhunt, who started the game, had held Cincinnati to just two hits through two and two-thirds innings. However, while facing the third hitter in the third inning, Whisenhunt seemingly felt some discomfort. A few minutes later, the pitcher was taken out of the game.
The Giants announced later on that Whisenhunt exited the game with left elbow discomfort.
Whisenhunt was having a rare good start after struggling for most of the season. The Giants’ sophomore pitcher has started in seven games this year, collecting a disastrous 7.03 ERA in 32 innings pitched and a 3-4 record. It’s a far cry from his rookie year, when he was solid in short spurts (5.01 ERA through five games).
The Giants ended up winning the game 5-0, shutting out the Reds completely. Rafael Devers hit a three-run homer in the second inning to extend the lead to five after the team scored two runs in the first inning. While the team did not score another run in the game after the second inning, the pitching staff made a collective effort to hold down the fort in Whisenhunt’s absence.
The Giants’ win snapped a four-game losing streak for the team. San Francisco was swept by the Boston Red Sox previously, a losing streak that sparked a flurry of roster moves. Among those moves were the decision to place Willy Adames on the 10-day IL and optioning former Little League standout Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson.
