New York Giants cornerback Greg Newsome II is looking to make an immediate impact in his first season with the team.
Tension spilled over for the New York Giants a few days ago after cornerback Greg Newsome II and safety Jevon Holland got into a scuffle with running back Cam Skattebo in practice.
They downplayed the incident, chalking it up to a heat-of-the-moment thing. If anything, it proved that the Giants are hell-bent on getting physical in the upcoming season.
Newsome signed a one-year contract worth $8 million in March, and he has been a solid addition to the defensive unit. Clearly, he is not lacking in confidence, making a strong claim ahead of Week 1.
“I think we got the best cornerback room in the league when you talk about depth and guys having the ability to play. I feel like all of us can be out there in Week 1 and play at a very elite level,” said Newsome in the video posted by SNY.
He also gushed about his teammates, Deonte Banks, Colton Hood, and Paulson Adebo.
“Tay has been amazing, just in his press coverage, very strong, very physical, a cerebral player. Hood being a rookie, what I like about him is he takes a lot from the vets. He asks a lot of questions. He learns. He’s been growing each and every day. Then, obviously, Deebo, he gets his hands on a lot of passes. He’s been another great vet to have in the room.”
Last season, Newsome logged 52 total tackles, nine passes defended, and one interception in five games with the Cleveland Browns and 12 games with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Giants are looking to end a three-year drought in the playoffs in their first year under coach John Harbaugh. They have only been to the playoffs twice in the past decade.
They will host the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium in Week 1.
