Germany stars – Germany’s World Cup knockout build-up has been shaken by reports that Julian Nagelsmann’s squad are asking for “more clarity” after a 2-1 defeat by Ecuador. Ahead of a last-32 match against Paraguay, players are said to feel “left in the dark,” with decisions

The mood in Germany’s camp has shifted from celebration to frustration before a single knockout sprint has started.

Germany will play Paraguay in the last-32 today after topping their group. but the campaign has already carried a sting: a 2-1 loss to Ecuador in their last match. Now. reports from inside the squad suggest head coach Julian Nagelsmann has left players looking for “more clarity” over his plans in the run-up to the knockout stages.

German newspaper BILD reports that players have expressed concerns they have been “left in the dark” by Nagelsmann when it matters most. The claim is that he barely speaks to his players outside of training sessions. The same report says the squad were also surprised when Nagelsmann revealed at a press conference that he would make few changes for the match against Ecuador.

The structure of Germany’s final training moments before that Ecuador game has also become part of the uneasy conversation. Nagelsmann was said to have lined up with an attacking trio of Florian Wirtz. Leroy Sané and Maximilian Beier in their final session. before replacing Beier with Jamal Musiala in the starting line-up.

After the Ecuador defeat. Nagelsmann was reported to have told his players that he wanted to give “everyone an opportunity” in his squad. The substitution plan in that match is described as another element of his message: a series of changes in the second half. paired with an emphasis on building team spirit.

Even so, attention has turned to who hasn’t been used. Just four players in Germany’s 26-man squad are said to have yet to receive minutes so far at the World Cup. Oliver Baumann and Alexander Nubel, both back-up goalkeepers, are among them. The other two names are Newcastle’s Nick Woltemade and Assan Ouedraogo. who was a late replacement for the injured Lennart Karl and has remained on the bench throughout.

Woltemade’s situation has drawn the sharpest concern. The forward. described as a fixture of Germany’s line-up during qualifying. has not been involved in the previous four fixtures. despite his momentum coming into the tournament. He scored four goals in six qualification matches and played in 11 straight matches before being left on the bench in Germany’s last four games.

In recent matches, Kai Havertz and Deniz Undav have reportedly forced their way ahead in Germany’s attack. Havertz has led the line in Germany’s three group matches and scored twice in their opening game against Curacao. Undav. meanwhile. has been effective off the bench—netting against Curacao—and then scoring twice as a substitute to help Germany come from behind to beat the Ivory Coast.

Germany’s knock-out path now starts with Paraguay, who qualified as third placed team. Paraguay advanced after beating Turkey and drawing with Australia, bouncing back from losing their opening match 4-1 to the United States.

Germany will start as favourites against Paraguay in the last-32. If they overcome that tie, Nagelsmann’s side could face a major test in the last-16 against France, with France set to play Sweden on Tuesday night.
