Germany braces for hotter week and renewed storms

Germany was set for another stretch of increasingly hot weather on Monday, with temperatures set to rise through the week, as well as the threat of further scattered thunderstorms. After a stormy and hazardous weekend, the coming week was forecast to bring sun, sustained heat and some severe weather – especially in the south and later in the west. The pattern was being driven by a persistent area of high pressure near the North Sea, funnelling warm, often humid air across much of the country.
While slightly cooler temperatures have been seen in northern regions, most of Germany remains under the influence of a growing heatwave. Rising temperatures across the country Overall Germany’s weather forecast for the week is simple: it’s getting hotter. In northern regions such as Lower Saxony and Bremen, temperatures are expected to climb steadily from the mid-to-high 20s at the start of the week to around 30–34C by Wednesday. Coastal areas will remain slightly cooler, but still warm and sunny. READ ALSO: Berlin Open final suspended
due to ‘severe weather’ Residents of Germany’s central and eastern regions – including Thuringia, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt – can expect plenty of sunshine, with temperatures in the mid-to-upper 30s. The southwest was set to bear the brunt of the heat. Here, the German Weather Service (DWD) was already describing conditions as “intense” and even “extreme” in places on Monday. Some localities may see the mercury approach 40C by Thursday, which is predicted to be the hottest day of the week in many areas. Where storms
could hit Alongside the heat, thunderstorms were still on the radar – though not everywhere or all the time. Early in the week, storms are most likely in southern and central regions, particularly around mountainous areas such as the Black Forest, Swabian Alps and Harz mountains. These could bring heavy downpours, hail and strong gusts of wind, but were expected to be fairly isolated. By Tuesday, storm activity should ease significantly, with much of the country seeing dry and sunny conditions. But the storm risk
returns towards the end of the week. From Friday onwards, western parts of Germany were more likely to see thunderstorms develop again, some of which could be severe, bringing intense rain and sudden gusts. Expect hot, sometimes humid days, warm nights – especially in cities – and the occasional sudden storm. Travel and outdoor plans
may be affected locally, particularly where thunderstorms develop. For now it looks like summer is firmly in control – and turning up the heat.
