The first time a new assistant claims it can “do the task” instead of just answering questions, you feel the temptation—and the unease—at the same time.

Google has started rolling out Gemini Spark to the Gemini app for macOS. The company introduced Spark at its I/O developer conference in May, describing it as an agentic assistant that turns Gemini into an “active partner” capable of taking action for you, not just responding.

On a Mac. Spark’s early promise is practical: you can ask it to sort the large number of PDFs in your Downloads into specific folders. It can also work with tasks across Google Workspace apps using files already on your computer—such as creating a spreadsheet with invoices saved on your laptop. Google says that in the future it will update Spark so it can run tasks on your computer based on what you tell it from your phone. If you’re away and need a specific file. you’ll be able to ask Spark to find it on your laptop and then email it to you.

That’s the appeal, but it comes with a question people can’t afford to ignore: what does the assistant get to see?

Google says Spark will only be able to access files you give it permission to use. For users who want more automation, it also supports deeper linking—Spark can be connected with Google Tasks and Keep. Additional integrations are planned with third-party apps including Canva. Dropbox. Instacart. OpenTable. and Zillow Rental. with those connections arriving over the coming weeks.

Gemini Spark for macOS is still in beta testing. For now, it’s limited to users in the US who are 18 and older and paying $100 a month for Google AI Ultra.

  1. 100 bucks a month???? For something that “sorts PDFs”?? I swear these companies just keep raising prices and calling it “agentic” lol. Also who knows what it’s seeing in the background.

  2. Am I reading this right that it emails stuff it finds on your laptop from your phone? Like even if you didn’t specifically pick the file? That sounds sketchy. I bet people are gonna get their info messed with.

  3. I don’t get the point of “Spark” if it only can access files you give permission to. Like that’s still access. And $100/month for beta is insane. Also why is Canva/Dropbox/Instacart even in here… seems like it’ll end up charging more later or messing up my stuff. Mac users get everything first, of course.
