For the second time, the story that began with crack cocaine in Los Angeles is being handed off with a new title—and a firm date. FX has set the release date for the “Snowfall” spinoff series “The Drop: A Snowfall Saga.”
“The Drop” will premiere on September 8 on FX and Hulu. The eight-episode drama will also be available to stream on Disney+ internationally, releasing one episode weekly at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT.
The series follows the events of “Snowfall,” a FX show that explored the crack cocaine epidemic in LA. Gail Bean and Isaiah John are returning as Wanda Bell and Leon Simmons.
Wanda’s drive. according to the official logline. is rooted in a conviction that West Coast rap can reshape American culture. She starts the series driven by that clear belief. assembling a ragtag group of geniuses and guiding them toward realizing their dreams. But the logline also makes the stakes immediate: Wanda has to navigate the dangerous overlap of music and street politics.
That means pulling in people closest to her, including her cousins Lamar Kinsey (Asante Blackk) and James Kinsey (Peyton Alex Smith). It also means pursuing volatile local rapper Artillery (Simmie “Buddy” Sims III), who is already in a tangle with law enforcement.
Wanda’s internship with former D-boy-turned-label-owner Darryl “DG” Grant (Brandon Mychal Smith) creates openings. It also sharpens existing fault lines, especially between Wanda and Leon. The logline describes Leon as someone who has vowed to leave the streets for good. while also chasing his own atonement through his free legal clinic. In this version of events. ambition. loyalty. and survival collide in the question the show keeps asking: how much is everyone willing to risk to build something lasting in a world that threatens to pull them down?.
Beyond Bean and John, the series regulars include Mykelti Williamson, Nicki Micheaux, Brandon Mychal Smith, Isidora Goreshter, Eric Balfour, Richard Portnow, Zaire Adams and Demetrius Grosse. Also returning from “Snowfall” is Quincy Chad, who played gang member Big Deon.
Behind the scenes, executive producers include Malcolm Spellman, Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme, Julie DeJoie, Michael London, Trevor Engelson and Paul Garnes. FX Productions is producing the series. “The Drop” was first rumored to be in development in 2023 and received a pilot order in 2025.
“The Drop” lands after “Snowfall. ” which was created by John Singleton. Eric Amadio and Dave Andron and ran on FX for six seasons from 2017 to 2023. Its cast included Damson Idris. Carter Hudson.
