Fuengirola marks 185 years since independence from Mijas

Fuengirola residents have expressed great pride in their town’s achievements during a special ceremony that celebrated 185 years of independence. Mayor Ana Mula led the main event in Plaza de España, where she sung the praises of the community’s progress and global recognition. Local leader shares vision for future success Mula told the audience, “It is true that on May 30, 1841, the first rulers of this beautiful enclave surely could not have imagined that we would come this far. Deep in our roots lies

the spirit of striving to be better and sharing that with the World. The nonconformity of those who never resign themselves and always aspire to surpass themselves. In these 185 years of history, Fuengirola has changed a great deal and, from my point of view, at a much faster pace than other towns. Our dynamism; the well-being we enjoy while simultaneously extending a helping hand to those in need; the harmonious design of our entire city, consistent in every neighbourhood, without distinction; and the excellence

of the services we enjoy allow Fuengirola to be an undisputed benchmark today: a unique city, unlike any other.” She went on to speak about how the clean streets are, safety, energy and how modern design create a space designed for daily enjoyment. Joint efforts from all citizens and the local government enable these results. Cultural events and educational activities Organisers projected a video that covered the historic moment and the town’s development since then. The Municipal Music Band then struck up several classical pieces

to close the central ceremony. School groups visited the Somos España sculptural murals while artists Paco Perez and Charo Garcia explained the works to primary and secondary pupils. Culture officials produced booklets to help young people explore the art pieces plus Spanish and local history. English versions of these materials have been printed for international visitors at key tourist spots.
