Valve is telling would-be buyers to plan their patience around the calendar.

Steam Controllers have effectively been sold out since they went on sale. and Valve says the situation won’t improve for everyone—at least not in the near term. Any fresh orders for the gamepad “may not be delivered until 2027. ” with users able to check the fulfillment dates for their specific order on the relevant Steam page.

For now, the delivery deadlines Valve is pointing to are September 2026 and December 2026. Additional orders are expected “In 2027.”

The Steam Controller itself is Valve’s proprietary gamepad. built to work exclusively with Steam rather than functioning as a generic PC option. Engadget’s Jessica Conditt reviewed the device back in April. describing it as a sturdy and sleek gamepad with high-end TMR thumbsticks. The catch. in her write-up. was also the defining limitation: it’s designed specifically for Steam. not broader PC compatibility—part of Valve’s push to maintain dominance.

Valve’s messaging on the backlog is blunt, even when it tries to stay polite. After heavy “understatement juice. ” an unnamed company spokesperson wrote: “Initial demand exceeded our expectations.” Then they added that. as Valve looks at current demand against how many units it knows it can make by the end of the year. “we cant to manage expectations as much as we can.”.

That doesn’t mean Valve is giving up on shipping. The same statement acknowledges the company will try to get as many devices out as it is able to achieve. But the delivery dates now floating around the Steam Controller page make one point hard to miss: for new buyers. this isn’t a waiting list you can ignore.

The delays land as Valve is also promising other hardware milestones. Valve says it is pledging to get its Steam Machine PC/console and Steam Frame headset into people’s homes this summer. If you’re waiting on the controller. the timing feels like more than a supply hiccup—it’s part of a broader sprint. one that Valve says it can only pace as production allows.
