White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt left viewers stunned on Monday night (August 10) when she claimed that America is now “more affordable” under President Donald Trump.
Speaking to Fox News host Sean Hannity on his eponymous show, Leavitt said, “Thanks to President Trump, Republicans, and common sense policies across the board, our country is safer and more affordable… we have steady progress under Trump right now.”
Leavitt’s comments run counter to reports from the government’s own Commerce Department, which showed that inflation surged to 3.5 percent over the last 12 months, its highest level in nearly three years. Inflation is now rising faster than wages for the first time since 2023, with annual wage gains averaging 3.2 percent.
Viewers were quick to point out Leavitt’s lies, with one X user writing, “Watching Leavitt on Fox News makes it look like we are all living in North Korea, watching state-run Fox TV.”
“Does she listen to herself,” said another.
“More affordable? What country is she talking about, gas price is over $6 a gallon in California. Please let’s be honest and speak the truth,” another added.
The main cause of inflation this year is Trump’s war against Iran, which has driven energy prices higher, with gas prices rising significantly over the past five months.
“Karoline was born yesterday, lying to us like we were too,” one YouTube commenter wrote.
An X user added, “This level of lying from a public official is actionable. I hope when your wannabe dictator is kicked out of office that you are personally held accountable for the damage your lies are causing.”
“This really confirms that the administration must be living in a different realm on Earth,” said another.
“Crazy since pessimism regarding the economy is rising sharply across the board, including among independents and even Republicans. There is no doubt that the cost of living continues to be a top concern,” added Tahra Hoops, director of economic research at the Chamber of Progress.
