Fortnite servers go dark for v40.41 update May 28

Fortnite down – On May 28, 2026, Fortnite is temporarily unavailable as servers undergo scheduled maintenance for the v40.41 update, the final patch of Chapter 7 Season 2. Players can’t log in or access matchmaking while the deployment runs, with downtime expected to last abo
For many Fortnite players, the message hit at the worst possible time: the login screen wouldn’t load, matchmaking wouldn’t start, and the usual routine of getting into a match suddenly stopped.
On May 28. 2026. Fortnite servers were taken offline for scheduled maintenance tied to the rollout of the v40.41 update—the final patch of Chapter 7 Season 2. The shutdown wasn’t described as a surprise crash. Instead. it was planned downtime. with players unable to log in. matchmake. or access game modes while Epic Games deployed the update.
Matchmaking and servers were disabled ahead of the rollout, and during maintenance Fortnite is effectively unavailable for many users. The game could not be accessed, login services were disabled, and matchmaking was turned off before the update installation. Players were expected to wait until the servers came back online once the patch finished deploying.
The timeline was set for the early hours: server downtime was reported to begin around 4 AM ET. For most updates. maintenance is typically expected to last between 1 and 3 hours. though it can run longer if patch deployment issues occur. After the update is completed, Fortnite is expected to become playable again automatically.
The v40.41 update is positioned as more than routine housekeeping. The deployment is expected to include final storyline content for Chapter 7 Season 2, pre-event changes before the “Shattered” live event, and bug fixes and balance adjustments—along with preparation work for the next season rollout.
During the downtime. players were told to rely on the official status information available through Epic Games’ official status page. Fortnite status updates on social media. and in-game login screen messages. The practical advice was simple: wait for the server restart announcement. avoid repeated login attempts. keep the game updated. and follow Epic’s updates for real-time status.
At this point, the shutdown is being treated as part of Fortnite’s normal update cycle. The expectation is that the servers return within a few hours once v40.41 finishes installing and matchmaking comes back online.

Of course it goes down right when I’m finally free 🙄
Wait so they took the servers down for an update… but my Xbox is the one messing up. Like I swear it’s not the game it’s my WiFi. Anyway I’ll try later I guess.
I saw the login screen just spinning and I thought it was a crash. “Planned maintenance” sounds nice but it feels like every update breaks something first lol. Also why is it always early morning, like not everybody has time at 4am ET.
Chapter 7 Season 2 final patch? so next update is gonna be Chapter 8 right? or is this like the last patch before they just shut the game off for good. People keep saying “status page” but that’s never helpful, it just says “we’re investigating” or whatever. I’m just gonna keep hitting login until it works.
