A former south suburban police officer knew the case had turned against him long before the sentencing date arrived. On June 8. Antoine Larry was handed more than five years and three months in federal prison for a scheme that prosecutors say relied on intimidation. dishonesty. and the vulnerability of drivers pulled over on the road.

Larry. 50. of Bolingbrook. served as a patrol officer for Illinois’ Phoenix Police Department when federal prosecutors said he conspired with another officer to steal cash and drugs from people during traffic stops. The leverage, prosecutors said, came from the threat of consequences that could quickly upend someone’s day. If a driver was at risk of being detained or having their car towed. the officers allegedly offered a trade: pay a bribe. and the officers would not tow the car or would let the person go without citations.

Prosecutors also said the scheme required cover-ups. They alleged Larry and his partner falsified police reports to conceal what they were doing. The conspiracy began in at least 2020 and continued until 2022, according to the statement.

Earlier this year, a federal jury in Chicago convicted Larry of conspiracy, extortion and attempted extortion charges.

His co-defendant, Jarrett Snowden, of Lansing, is scheduled for a later reckoning. Snowden pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge before trial and admitted his role in the traffic stop scheme. His sentencing is set for Oct. 27, 2026.
