Former Bowie police sergeant sentenced after judge says shooting followed ‘nonthreatening’ encounter – WTOP News
A former Bowie, Maryland, police sergeant was sentenced to 30 years in prison for a September 2024 shooting along Collington Road.
Robert Warrington, 37, will serve all but 18 months of that sentence on home detention, followed by five years of supervised probation, Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Tara Jackson said.
Warrington was convicted in May of attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment and misconduct in office. The judge ruled that nothing about the interaction showed an immediate threat, calling it a nonthreatening situation that should not have escalated to a use of force.

The case centered on an encounter captured on dashcam video after Warrington pulled up to what appeared to be a stranded driver on Maryland Route 197.
A man walked by and said the woman behind the wheel was with him and taking him to the hospital. Moments later, Warrington pulled out his service weapon and fired a shot in the man’s direction.
Warrington on the dashcam video could be heard saying “he had a gun” and the man responded from the ground, “I don’t have a gun.”
The woman said the man was going back to get a hat that had fallen from the car.
