With Netflix having successfully pivoted from mega-budget tentpoles to mid-budget blockbusters such as War Machine, The Rip, Thrash, Apex, and the recently released The Last House, the plan for the future seems clear. The streamer is deploying a similar strategy for its international content, which has been dominated this year by a host of South Korean and Spanish-language hits. However, the biggest non-English movie on the streamer so far this year came from India. In fact, the movie in question isn’t even a Netflix original, but a theatrical release whose record-breaking box-office success translated to streaming.
Netflix’s biannual viewership report noted the film’s massive performance and revealed that it has accumulated 37 million views on the service so far. While this figure is tied with the 37 million views garnered by the breakout South African movie 180, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos recently identified the Indian blockbuster as “the most-watched non-English movie in the world this year” at an event hosted by the Indian Express in New Delhi. The movie we’re talking about broke records in its theatrical run, emerging as the highest-grossing Indian movie of all time in North America with a $23 million haul. Globally, it grossed nearly $150 million.

The movie in question is Dhurandhar, a 214-minute spy-thriller starring Ranveer Singh and directed by Aditya Dhar. The movie follows an undercover Indian operative who infiltrates the Pakistani underworld and rises to a level where he can influence the nation’s political machinery. The movie combines the espionage thrills of the James Bond franchise with the crime drama of The Godfather. Despite its success at the box office and on streaming, Dhurandhar was widely criticized as propaganda. It now holds a 35% critics’ score and a “Verified Hot” 96% audience score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. It was followed by a sequel titled Dhurandhar: The Revenge, which emerged as an even bigger hit with a $190 million global haul.
