Food bank opens sites to cover summer meal gap

summer meal – As schools close across the D.C. area for summer break, the Capital Area Food Bank has opened 17 meal sites across Washington, Virginia and Maryland—offering free meals for children 18 and under without pre-approval or eligibility checks.

For many families in the D.C. area, summer break doesn’t just mean longer days and fewer school bells. It means the end of a routine that kept hundreds of children fed.

When schools close this week for most students in the region, the Capital Area Food Bank warned there’s a looming mealtime gap that can leave children hungry.

Alexis Lahr, the organization’s director of Family Government Nutrition Programs, said the loss of school meals hits especially hard over the summer. “We know summer is a particularly difficult time for kids because they lose access to those school meals,” she said.

The food bank has started filling that gap early. It has already opened 17 sites in Washington, D.C., Virginia and Maryland where families with children 18 and under can show up and eat without pre-approval.

“One of the great things of these open sites is there’s absolutely no eligibility requirements, no ID check,” Lahr said. “Nothing is needed.”

At those sites, meals are designed to be kid-friendly while still built around healthier choices. Lahr described examples that include “healthy versions of chicken nuggets” and “little Lunchables-style pizzas.” She said each option still comes with a whole-grain component and a fruit and vegetable alongside it.

The food bank’s summer program is already moving fast. Last summer, it served more than 62,000 meals and snacks, and Lahr said the program may be on track to surpass that this year.

“Summer is a really difficult time for families and we’ve been seeing the need for food assistance not easing up,” she said. “I hope that this can be supportive for them.”

For families trying to find a nearby pickup location, the Capital Area Food Bank maintains a list of open lunch locations on its website.

  1. No eligibility checks?? That sounds kinda too good to be true. So like anyone can just walk in and get food or what?

  2. My cousin said this is basically a free lunch thing during summer break, but it’s still kinda crazy school being the only reliable meal. I wonder where they’re located though, like which neighborhoods.

  3. If there’s no ID check then people will take advantage. I’m not saying kids don’t need it, but come on, “nothing is needed” is how problems start. Also how do they even know it’s for children 18 and under if nobody checks?

  4. Healthy chicken nuggets and Lunchables style pizza is the best headline ever lol. But seriously though, 62,000 meals?? That’s huge. I didn’t even know DC schools close and the food drops off like that, thought summer was just… summer.
