Florida Governor Candidate Arrested Following Domestic Altercation

The race for the Florida governor’s mansion took a strange, quiet turn this weekend in Palm Coast. Kevin Cichowski, 46, who is currently listed as a Democratic candidate in the upcoming race to replace Ron DeSantis, was taken into custody by local deputies Friday morning. It’s the kind of news that stops you—the air in the office felt thick when the report crossed the desk.

According to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, Cichowski faces several serious charges, including multiple counts of aggravated battery, robbery, and witness tampering. The incident allegedly involved two victims over the age of 65. The details are grim: reports say one victim was struck with a cane, while a cellphone was thrown at the other. Or maybe the order of those events was swapped, but the violence described is clear enough.

Officers arrived at the home to find a tense scene, evacuating two individuals—one of whom was reportedly bedridden. It’s hard to reconcile the campaign trail with these allegations. Cichowski, who previously dipped his toes into local politics with a run for Palm Coast mayor back in 2021, maintained his innocence while being led away. “I haven’t done anything wrong,” he told police in body camera footage released via Misryoum. “This is insane.”

He also claimed during the arrest that his parents were experiencing a mental health crisis and that his own father had attempted to take his life. Whether that holds any weight in the legal proceedings remains to be seen—actually, that’s for a judge to decide later. The sheriff’s office noted that Cichowski made suicidal statements during the encounter, which led them to place him into protective custody.

With the primary election looming on August 18, the field of candidates looking to unseat the current administration is already crowded with dozens of names. This incident just adds another layer of complexity to a cycle that was already feeling pretty disjointed. It is unclear if he has secured legal counsel yet, as of Sunday evening.

Things might change once more facts come out. Or they might just stay quiet, given the nature of the charges.
